My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

HELEN is a 6 year old spayed chocolate female Lab who weighs 51 pounds. When Helen first came to Lab Rescue she was in rough shape. She was emaciated and blind and was found walking along the highway. Once at the shelter in West Virginia, her sweet disposition was discovered and Lab Rescue was called to help. Helen is a chocolate Lab who's spent so much time outside that her coat is very bleached. Her initial veterinary tests revealed diabetes which is what caused the blindness. It is likely that it had never been diagnosed and never been treated. Helen has been under veterinary care since mid-April and has begun to gain weight. We have been controlling her blood sugar levels with Insulin and, initial glucose levels appear to be stabilizing. Helen is becoming the happy Lab that she always should have been. She loves toys! She loves people! She loves belly rubs! She will need someone who can commit to giving her insulin on a regular schedule every day. She is approved for kids 10+.

Adopters must meet these requirements:
Setting: Rural, Suburban
Dwelling: Single Family Home, Townhome
Fencing: No fence ok

Update: Helen has been with Lab Rescue for a while now, and her foster mom can attest to what a great dog she is! We are all stumped that she hasn't found her forever family yet. Here is what you need to know about Helen:

1. She has excellent house manners. She is 100% house trained and doesn't need a crate. She doesn't counter surf or destroy things.
2. She loves to snuggle. Everyone she meets falls in love with her sweet spirit and her gentle soul.
3. She can SEE! Although Helen initially was blind, surgery has helped her see, and she can now track a ball that you toss and will bring it back to you (almost) every time. Squeaky balls are her favorite!
4. She loves to be with her people, whether you are in the house or outside, she'll just stick to your side.
5. She LOVES walks! She walks well on leash with an Easy Walk harness.
6. She takes treats gently - loves cheese and chicken.
7. She's never been around other dogs, and so she's not sure what to do with them when she sees them in close proxmity (remember, she used to be blind!) so sometimes she will bark at them. Because of this, Helen should be an only dog. When walking and she sees other dogs at a distance, she is interested and wags her tail.
8. She is a calm and patient girl who LOVES car rides!
9. Helen is a diabetic. She requires two insulin shots per day (morning and evening) to manage this. The shots are inexpensive and SUPER easy (we'll teach you!).
10. She is looking for an adopter who isn't gone for a long workday so her shots can be kept on schedule. This doesn't mean you have to be home all the time, she's perfectly fine when you leave her for up to 5 hours.
