Miley is a female St. Bernard who is approximately 7 years old. She is a good dog that loves to go out on walks.
At the time Miley was surrendered to our rescue, she was underweight and had deep wounds and thickened skin on all four legs. After some nursing care and antibiotics, she was sedated for a spay. While under sedation, our medical staff noted that she had very thickened skin in several areas on her trunk as well. There was too much skin affected to remove it completely, so a biopsy was taken. Unfortunately, the biopsy was suggestive of a rare condition known as dermatofibrosis. The thickening taking place in Miley's skin has the potential to also take place in her kidneys and cause kidney disease. Blood work done 2/21/17 shows normal kidney function at this time, but there is potential that this could change. Ideally, blood work and possibly ultrasounds to check her kidneys should be done every 6-12 months. Her thickened skin does not cause her any pain, and she has a good quality of life now. If you have any further questions regarding Miley's condition, please don't hesitate to ask our medical staff.
