My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

7/12/17 Update: Reggie has been cleared for placement by his vet and is ready to find his forever home! We are happy to report that Dr. L advised us this week that she feels Reggie is ready to move forward in his life! Ideally, we are seeking an adopter who is within a reasonable drive to Norwalk, CT so Reggie’s care can continue under Dr. L’s guidance. It is a requirement of his adoption terms that Reggie be seen by the vet to check his ear every 2-3 weeks, to keep any complications at bay. As time goes on, these preventative visits may be extended to a longer period of time in between visits. Reggie’s adopter will always need to be mindful of checking for signs of infection.

5/22/17 Update from Reggie's Vet: I Just wanted to give you an update on Reggie. He is doing well; taking the meds well at home and here when he boards with us in pill pocket "sandwiches." Today when I checked him there is no discharge (pus) in the ear and the ear canal is no longer red inside, for the most part. I also didn't see any bacteria on the slide from the ear. The flap above, which had a yeast infection when I first saw him, is staying clean without any treatment from me now. I think the growth there is shrinking now that the area is no longer infected.

The ear canal is nice and open the outer half (about 1 cm in), but deeper in there is still swelling. It's basically still swollen shut, which will trap the infection and either make it likely to come back or not allow the existing infection to completely resolve. The steroid in the ear suppository and the oral steroid he is getting is helping to open that up. It looks better each time I look at it and we are just shy of 4 weeks into the treatment. I am pleased with the progress so far!

Reggie's Story: Reggie, or “Red” as he is affectionately known, came to our rescue after having a chronic ear infection for over a year. His former owners cared lovingly for this 4 year-old purebred boy and had a surgical procedure done on his ear to help with drainage. Unfortunately, Reggie came down with a MRCA infection in the same ear a few weeks after the surgery, requiring an additional procedure. Because the continuing comprehensive care that Reggie needed became too taxing on his elderly owners, the family felt it best for Reggie to find a new home. With the infection now behind him, Reggie has been staying with a skilled behaviorist in CT where they have worked to desensitize Reggie’s reactive behavior toward having his ear touched. As can be seen in this video, wonderful progress has been made and "Red" is nearly ready to head to his forever home.

Reggie's former family shared such superb details with us, "Reggie gets very excited when anyone comes into the house as he loves people. Sometimes when people first come in, he jumps up, but only enough to get his feet off the floor slightly; he does not jump on people. He loves attention, always loved being scratched, and he loved to sit on my father’s lap like a big lap dog! Reggie is crate trained, trust-worthy in the house, and he likes car rides. He does not have much experience on a leash and got most of his exercise in the fenced in yard where he loved fetching tennis balls. Reggie has been with other family dogs in his house. He does fine with them inside and especially loves to run with them in the yard. He enjoys spending time outside in the nice weather and would love to be part of his adopters' daily routine. Reggie knows the commands, “sit,” “down,” “stay,” and “paw.” We have never seen any food issues at all – although my parents spoiled him with table food, so he is a bit of a picky eater. He doesn't like thunder, of course, but I haven't seen anything else bother him. He loves stuffed toys and carries them around like babies!”

Reggie is neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, and is heartworm negative. Reggie is reported to be good with children. However, because of the sensitivity related to his ear, our rescue will only place him in a home with children over the age of 12. Additionally, his adopter will need to be mindful not to put Reggie in compromising situations.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
