Jack von Jemgo is a handsome 5-year-old long-haired German Shepherd. His ideal home would be with family members who are calm and dog-savvy, and until he feels confident that his new family has everything under control, he’ll need someone who will patiently work with his tendency to react to other dogs while on a leash. He needs someone who is home more and would understand that he will experience separation anxiety as he adjusts to a new environment. While he loves his family members, he requires a very slow and proper introduction to any new people. Even though he’ll quietly and contently curl up at your feet while you work, Jack is no couch potato, and he thrives on his 2–3 mile walks per day. He would do best as an only dog or perhaps with an easy-going and submissive female. He loves to chase birds, squirrels, and lizards out of the backyard, so no cats for this prey-driven boy!

Based on our experience, Westside's current thinking is to usually match first-time shepherd owners with a mix versus a purebred shepherd. Mixes are "softer" and somewhat more malleable. Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor.
