My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dax the Hairless Wonder Dog! What a cool little dude! If gargoylish good looks are your thing, he's the dude for you! Dax is a three year old, 30-pound terrier mix who, prior to finding the safety of rescue, had only known a hoarding, condemned home, and then a small rural shelter willing to euthanize him simply because he was "too ugly to be adopted." WHAT?! Ok, after a myriad of tests and skin scrapes, it was determined that Dax had Demodex as a little puppy, and hypothyroidism. Demodex is very common in puppies, and easily treatable. However, Dax's owners never sought treatment or frankly any care at all, for him, or the other dogs in the home. As a result, Dax lived the first three years of his life with incredibly awful itching and discomfort. All of his hair fell out, and he was completely naked, and with dew claws grown all the way back into his feet when he was rescued! With a series of treatments, Dax's Demodex cleared up completely, and his thyroid levels have evened out. Dax is FINALLY READY to find the very best friend he has waited his whole life for! To answer all of those questions in your mind right now, Dax will likely never grow more hair than he has now, and that means his skin is sensitive to prolonged exposure to sunshine and cold temperatures. He is very comfortable in sweaters and tees, which both keep him warm, and protect part of his skin. In fair weather, he likes to streak naked as a jay bird, and that's just fine with us. He's finally happy and healthy, so go for it, kid! Dax absolutely loves his "spa day," as we call it in foster care, which is when he gets a regular bath like all of the other dogs, but then gets pampered with a good coconut oil rub down, which helps keep his skin moisturized just like his people! Last, to keep him healthy and balanced, Dax takes a small thyroid pill in his food twice daily. That's it! Otherwise, Dax the Hairless Wonder greatly enjoys walking, even jogging (he would totally love a running buddy because that's where foster mom has drawn the line!), long dates with his knuckle bone chewy, and all of the best petting you can give! Dax is house trained with regular opportunity, crate trained, and has pretty good leash manners. He enjoys riding in the car, trail and neighborhood walks, and a nice, fluffy bed. Dax is good with other dogs-large and small-not the best friend in the world of cats, but is good with older, dog savvy children. He is also fully vaccinated, neutered, and microchipped.
