MEET CANDY!
This little lady is named Candy! City of Elderly Love rescued this little Mutt (perhaps Chihuahua or JRT mix?) from Philly's animal control shelter where she had been surrendered at the estimated age range of 8-10 years. Candy was not handling the scary shelter-setting well and was selected for euthanasia because she was so scared. Luckily, a foster parent stepped up to save her life!
Candy is now living it up in foster care! Candy is around 20 lbs. and is in great shape. She is calm in the house, but does have tons of energy when we go out for walks. She easily does upwards of three miles at a brisk walk and still wants to keep going! She would be a great walking or hiking partner. She loves burrowing in blankets and snuggling on the couch. She gets a kick out of running back in forth with me in the backyard and is trying to get used to playing with toys (she would rather just play the running game or go exploring). She loves her peanut butter Kong, will dance on her hind legs for treats, and is so obsessed with carrot sticks that she immediately carries them off to her crate to eat in private. While she prefers to be with you, she does not bark AT ALL when she is in her room. She is so quiet that you could have someone over your house and they would not even know she is there. She does not chew or scratch on furniture, she really is an easy dog to have around.
Candy isn't currently living with other dogs and she might need a slower introduction to new dogs in her new home, she is very well behaved and friendly to the dogs and people while out on walks. She seems to love dogs, big and small, and is very appropriate when she meets them. Candy is currently living with cats in her foster home, but is being kept separate from them because she has a pretty strong prey drive. She shouldn't live with cats or other small animals (besides dogs) in her future home. Candy is even a little smarty pants! She knows some basic commands like sit, stay and beg! She comes when she is called and redirects easily. She really wants to make her person happy and is eager to learn new things!
Candy had likely not had the easiest life before coming to COEL. She has a burn scar on her back and lacks some confidence. And while she has made great strides since leaving the scary shelter, she takes a few minutes to warm up to new people. Once she knows you, you'll be her best buddy forever and she turns into a cuddle bug. She'll even nuzzle your hand with her snout for love! But since she does sometimes react out of fear and may nip in new situations (like at the vet), she shouldn't live with children.
Candy is available for adoption through City of Elderly Love. She is vaccinated, microchipped and spayed. She is also negative for heartworm and lymes disease. Interested in adopting her?
