Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Sammy is a very young looking and acting 9 year old White Maltese. His owners surrendered him to us late in the afternoon on April 10th. The wife has severe anxiety and said that Sammy made her nervous. The husband said Sammy had started barking a lot when he was around but as soon as he left, Sammy would stop. That's indeed what happened.
That evening, Sammy was skeptical of being approached and would growl and draw away from our loving hands. The very next day, Sammy was already responding to our kind hearted volunteers, allowing them to walk him and pet him but he still did not want to be picked up. Two days after coming to our Rescue, Sammy is a different pup. We can pick him up, pet him, walk him, give him love, take his photo, all with no problem whatsoever.
We all know how sensitive dogs are, picking up on the vibes around them. It seems fairly apparent that Sammy was feeling the anxiety and nervousness surrounding him. The barking seems to have been an attempt to get the husband's attention. The drawing away and growling may have been from being pushed away or trying to "shush" him, or even something more physical. All we know for sure is that this boy is a love and we're so happy that he was brought to us so we can let him feel peace, gentleness and welcoming arms.
We're going to keep reassuring him while waiting for his Vet visit to get him up to date on all his vaccinations. Keep your eye on this pup's availability if you have a loving home and time to spend with this special boy.
