My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

04-13-17
Can you imagine going through your first six months of life not knowing what true love feels like? For Cricket’s first six months, no one taught her manners or how to be a part of a family. She was chained up outside, subjected to cruel neighbors that didn’t like dogs, and never once saw a vet. Thankfully her former owners knew that she needed a better life and we were able to rescue her! When we first met her she was very shy and would not come to us. Within minutes, she was in our laps giving as many kisses as possible. We like to think she knew she was being rescued.

We were told that Cricket’s dad was a full blooded Australian Shepherd and her mom was a Lab mix. She definitely exhibits characteristics from both breeds. Cricket’s trainer is amazed at how well and fast she learns new commands and welcomes new challenges. With the right training she would be an amazing agility or frisbee dog, but for now loves a good walk or run on the greenway. We have 3 small kids, whom she adores, and there have been a few times she has tried to herd them into the family room so they’ll throw her stuffed duck for her. The lab in Cricket is probably what makes her so loyal. She always comes the second she’s called and wants to be by your side as often as possible, but has shown no signs of separation anxiety.
In a little over two months Cricket has become an amazing indoor dog and family member that loves nothing more than snuggling, going for walks and car rides and playing with our other dogs and cat. She’s housebroken, crate trained and has never destroyed anything in our house. Cricket can be full of energy and loves to play, but when it’s quiet time she knows to grab a bone or settle down for a nap. At night she sleeps in her crate, but occasionally we’ll break the rules and let her sleep in our bed. To say she’s the best snuggle buddy ever would be an understatement.
As with most rescues, Cricket isn’t perfect...yet. Due to her past, she’s slow to warm up to strangers. For the most part she’ll ignore adults, but if they come too close she will growl. She’s become very attached to me so I think her need to protect me plays a large part in that. Luckily she’s very food driven so whenever someone gives her a treat, she seems fine with them. Cricket has never attempted to bite anyone. She is also living up to her name quite well. She loves to jump straight up into the air when she is excited, and has actually taught herself how to jump into my arms. While this trick might not make everyone happy, it’s actually come in handy a few times and she’s no longer nervous about being picked up. Cricket knows the “off” command and has come to the realization that jumping is frowned upon. I recently discovered she can jump our 4’ fence. So she will need a fenced yard with a 6ft fence or an invisible fence.
Cricket is up to date on vaccines, spayed and is on monthly heartworm and flea protection. She is heartworm negative. Currently she weighs about 35lbs and the vet does not think she will grow much more.
The ideal family for Cricket will be one that enjoys spending time outside, going for walks and hikes, and is able to give her unconditional love and snuggles. Because she loves other dogs, a playmate would be awesome too. She adores kids but because she can be full of energy, a household with elementary aged kids and older would be the best fit. A life with fun-loving Cricket will never be without laughter and kisses!
