Asterope is a sweet, chatty, walrus-whiskered couch potato who loves to spend time curled up or sprawled out on the couch with anyone who will sit still. She loves to snuggle next to or on a lap, or even climb up onto the back of the couch to whuffle and nuzzle your face. She greets you at the door when you get home, and likes to keep you on task through your daily routine, chatting and escorting you around -- especially at mealtimes and bedtime. She is not shy about claiming people with headbutts, and sometimes is so excited to see you that she will flop over onto the carpet, already purring, for belly rubs.

She’s a bit of a funny kitty, being smaller than her sister with a little bit of a stubby nose, and is very wriggly -- she doesn’t mind being picked up and held, but when she decides it’s time for her to reassert herself, she’ll try to climb up onto your shoulders and drape herself there like some kind of mink stole. Sometimes she will then try to rub her face against yours, purring, from this perch.

Through her whole life, we’ve also been unable to convince her that some parts of the house are not her domain, so bookshelves, mail baskets, and all such perches may be occupied at times. She has never been shy about occupying any space; it’s not clear that she has any sense of guilt! That said, she is a well-behaved kitty, keeping her scratches to the posts and scratch mats and her business to the litterbox. You may, however, find cat fur on the countertops, and we make sure not to leave things in the sink that she might try lapping up.

Unfortunately, her owner passed away suddenly and so this sweetheart is without people to call her own. She’s grown a bit thin over the last year as her owner was in and out of the hospital (we think from loneliness, as her basic needs were cared for), and she could use some loving company to help her regain a good weight. She has also suffered from irritable bowel disease, and is on a steroid medication to treat it (she is fairly good about taking medication). We are also working on feeding her more canned food than (grain-free) dry, at a veterinarian’s recommendation.

She grew up in a household with one other cat (her sister Alcyone) and no dogs; a dog is probably a bit much for her. She has had a fairly quiet household over the last several years, but she was also happy living with three children before they moved away. She does not like to share her person with her sister, Alcyone, but when she lived with one owner they did work it out.

About Fancy Cats Rescue Team, Inc.

About Our Rescue Group...

Fancy Cats Rescue Team was founded to provide the community a "safety net" for cats and kittens that are abused and abandoned, or added to the euthanasia list at the shelters that we are currently participating with. We are a 501 (c) (3) Nonprofit Organization and participate with the United Way/CFC #8929. The goal is to have no kill shelters in place. Education and responsible pet ownership are the foundation of our organization. Our program provides literature, counseling, referral services and educational resources to families and individuals needing guidance. Teaching people responsible pet guardianship by spay and neutering their pets, behavioral modification and health concerns. We also provide a mentoring environment for our youth volunteers where they can learn the rewards of community service while caring for animals that need their gentle, loving kindness. They also interact with the community providing self-confidence and the ability to interact with a variety of cultures and diverse backgrounds. Once an animal is received into our program, they remain with us until a safe, appropriate home is found. They are never euthanized based on their age or space limitations. They are given appropriate medical care, immunizations, spays or neuters and endless hours of tender, loving care. We are an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff. We are funded by community donations, 91% goes toward the care and well being of our animals. Our adoption fees help offset our veterinary bills.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Our adoptions are held at the Fair Lakes PETsMART in Fairfax Virginia, at the Chantilly PetsMART, at the Gainesville PetsMART, and at the Springfield PetsMART
Check our website for upcoming adoptions.

Our Adoption Process...

Our adopters fill out an application that screens for problems that may be detrimental to our cats and kittens. Once the adopter is approved we provide veterinary referrals which help with low cost spays or neuters for the kittens that are too young at the time of adoption. We are always available to help with behavioral issues that arise. We provide numerous information sheets in our adoption folders, plus the medical background of each cat. The only fees involved with our program are adoption fees that offset our veterinary bills.
