I am already neutered, housetrained, purebred, up to date with shots, good with kids, good with dogs, and not good with cats.
Why are German Shepherds listed as one of the smartest dog breeds in the world?
It's because of their ability to learn new skills quickly and their desire to follow instruction.
Maverick is a wonderful example of a highly intelligent GSD, learning new things at lightning fast speed. When he first arrived at Char-Wills, Mav was very high-energy, strong on the leash and would jump up with excitement when meeting new people. Our volunteers have been giving him a nice walk each day and play sessions in the training building where he can fetch and run around. This has greatly improved his over-all behavior. He now is a pleasure to walk on the trails, keeping the same pace as his human friend, and "checking in" frequently. We have been consistent with not allowing him to jump up, and he is much better with this as well. Maverick still has a lot of energy, but he listens well and responds when taught how to behave. He is very smart. He simply needs to be taught what you would like him to do and seems to truly enjoy learning.
The ideal family for Maverick will have the time and desire to continue his manners training and also actively play with him each day. This could be jogging, playing fetch (his absolute favorite!), hiking, etc.
Maverick is about 1 year old, neutered, microchipped, UTD on vaccinations and ready to find an active family to take him on adventures. Because of his size, and the knock-down factor, we are recommending a home with older children. (He is very friendly, he just doesn't realize his own size!) He enjoys the company of most large-breed female dogs and might also be OK with some large-breed male dogs. Mav has very high prey-drive, so NO CATS, bunnies, chickens or any other small animals for him!
