My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ginger is a sweet natured, fun-loving girl. She has been friendly to everyone she meets including children, other dogs and cats. She is a young adult approximately 2 years old and currently weighs 23 lbs. She loves to play and would enjoy having children in the home or another canine companion who would enjoy playing with her.

Here is what Ginger’s foster family had to say:

Ginger is a snuggle bug. She loves people, adults and children alike. We have not seen any shyness with people, although she seems most comfortable with women. She is very affectionate and is happy to shower you with kisses. It’s so easy to fall in love with this sweet girl. She is like my shadow when I am walking around the house and loves to cuddle up on the couch. She has the sweetest disposition. I have a large breed dog and two mature cats and Ginger gets along great with them all.

She loves our 70+ lb Labrador Retriever and plays with her until they are both exhausted. Once she has exerted her energy during play or a long walk, she’s more relaxed and takes long naps with my Lab. Although she always has energy to follow me around the house. Overall she is most happy when she is close to her two and four legged friends.

Ginger was cautious at first, but adapted well. On walks, Ginger is highly cautious with larger dogs although she seems to especially love larger breeds after getting to know them and loves to run and roughhouse with other dogs. She loves to play with squeaky toys and tug of war is one of her favourite games. She loves going for walks of course. She loves chewing bones from the Bulk Barn. Ginger is very healthy although she was extremely thin when we first met her but she has a big appetite and is on her way to a healthy weight.

Ginger does not counter surf or chew things she shouldn’t. She is starting to learn some basic commands- come, sit and off, but may benefit from obedience training. She’s completely house trained. We let her out before bed and she’s good until the morning. She needs to be encouraged to walk without pulling, but that’s trainable. She does not try to escape from the backyard, but may run out the front door if given the chance. She needs to be crated or tied in the backseat when out in the car or she will try to sit in the front passenger seat.

When she first came to us we crated her when we were out and she did bark and whine but she has been slowly getting better and we now leave her uncrated. She is however never completely alone as we have a dog and two cats. She doesn’t seem to care as much when my husband and my son leave the house but she appears anxious even when I am outside gardening and she can watch me from the window. During the day she is happy to stretch out and nap in the big dog bed. At night she sleeps on the bed with us and never disturbs us. She sleeps through the night without a sound. Ginger doesn’t seem too fond of my son playing the drums.

Ginger is usually a very quiet dog. She does not bark when people or dogs walk past the house. She does not bark when we have friends over. She does not bark when the neighbours dog aggressively barks at her. She’s quiet throughout the day and night. The only time we have heard her bark is when we leave the house but as I mentioned she is getting better with this.

Ginger will benefit in having other pets in the house for companionship. She is great with kids. She is so gentle with people, but I would recommend 10 years and older as she does get hyper at times. She would benefit from an active lifestyle, as she seems calm and relaxed after exhausting her energy reserves.
