Bean is a very special little boy. He is still a puppy in many ways but during his short life he has been mistreated and this has caused some issues that will need patience and love to get over. He needs someone that is home more often than not, that is willing to work with him and love him, someone that can see the potential in this little guy and truly give him a chance. He is about a year old and currently weighs 34 lbs.
Here is what Bean’s foster family had to say:
Bean is a lover and desperately wants your love and affection. He loves to shower you with kisses and loves cuddling. He likes to be wherever you are, involved in whatever you are doing. He is definitely a hound and will often sing and tell you stories. He also likes to sing me a welcome home song each day when I return from work. We have a very vocal dog next door and luckily he doesn’t bark or otherwise react to hearing that dog. He does have puppy energy and is excitable but then crashes for a nap.
He is very social and wants to meet everyone. He is a little shy when first meeting men with a deep voice but as long as they get on his level and let Bean approach, all is well. He is good with my cat at home and on walks Bean is social with other dogs. Due to his issues, he would do best in a home with adults only or older children that were able to understand his issues. He would be fine with other dogs or cats in the home.
Although friendly and wanting attention, he needs time to get to know you are safe before he can be trusted with any fast movements and he cannot be moved or grabbed by his collar. Slow and steady reassurance and trust has changed this behaviour but I can still see his trust issues in this regard with new people. He’s grown so much with his behaviours that I feel he will grow out of this issue with a patient loving forever home. I have been doing a lot of work putting on his collar and taking it back off each night. I have also spent a lot of time just petting his neck and giving him treats to get him used to hands on his collar being a good thing. In his new home he would need someone like myself that was willing to give him time and continue to encourage him and love him and allow him to forget whatever happened to him in the past. As well, when I first tried to crate him he put up a real fuss and so I don’t crate him any longer and really there is no need as long as you do a general puppy proofing. I leave him loose in the home while I go to work and he has never gotten into anything he shouldn’t or caused any damage to anything, or had any accidents.
He is good about entertaining himself while I am gone, and often carries his teddy around with him. I will find him sometimes sucking on his blanket. When I am home, he likes to play fetch and he enjoys going for walks and hikes but his little legs tire quickly and he likes to come back home for a nap. He is definitely not a dog that requires excessive exercise!
He will steal food if it’s out or not told to lay down during meals….if you say “leave it”, 9 out of 10 times he will. When he has his blanket, it is very hard to stop him from chewing on it or get him to drop it. He didn’t no any commands when he first arrived but he now knows sit, lay down, drop it, come, down and no. He is a very smart boy if you are willing to work with him. He is fully house trained and does a cute song and dance when he needs to go out. He is sort of leash trained. He does and can walk fine but he is a hound and so it is nose to the ground. I have been working on correcting this. I have had him off leash and he does come when called and doesn’t ever wander far from me. He is not good about going in the car and I have to actually lift him and put him in. He is fine getting out on his own. He pants and is unsettled during the ride. Of course with more desensitizing, I think he would eventually be fine.
Bean is full of life and love. He’s full of personality and the biggest puppy eyes you have ever seen. He’s eager to please and love and be loved. When his wall comes down, he is his amazing self. He is going to make someone very happy if just given a chance.
He would probably not do well living in an apartment where someone didn’t enjoy his singing. He needs a home with a securely fenced yard as I think fear of things like loud noises outside might startle him and cause him to take off if you weren’t right there with him. Once he is used to particular sounds he is fine. He doesn’t need a large yard to run around in but a home with a backyard where he could find things to sniff and explore would be ideal.
He would be fine with other dogs and cats in the home. He would enjoy someone that is retired and just looking for a loving companion. He is not a dog that would do well in a kennel for hours a day. He needs and deserves someone that is around to help him continue learning to trust and allows him the opportunity to shower them with affection.
