My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Oreo was transferred to our rescue after his owner made the difficult decision to surrender him to a shelter. He's a 5 year old shih tzu who is polite, friendly, and sweet EXCEPT when anyone attempts to get near him to brush or groom him. He growls, and will bite and attack if the contact for grooming is continued. The surrendering owner was not Oreo's first owner, and she was not informed about his severe aversion to grooming. Obviously with a shih tzu's beautiful long silky coat, regular grooming is essential for the health, cleanliness, and appearance of the dog. We don't know why Oreo hates being groomed so much, and neither did this owner who made every attempt to get him groomed by multiple different groomers, but ultimately was unable. The only way Oreo can tolerate his necessary grooming is by being sedated. This is a safe, but relatively expensive procedure that this owner was not financially prepared to take on when she brought Oreo in her home. Other than his grooming-induced aggression, Oreo is a fantastic dog who was loved and well-cared for in every way except grooming (which made the decision to surrender him SO difficult for his owner). He is friendly, playful, and loves to cuddle. He's house trained, and gets along well with cats and other dogs. Oreo LOVED the young children in his previous home, who discovered that he responds well to the nickname "Reo". He's patient and polite UNLESS you attempt to groom him. If you think Oreo might be the right fit for your family, and you are able to committ to regular sedated grooming appointments with a qualified veternarian, please consider applying for him.
