My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Ben is a 10-year-old neutered male black lab. Ben weighs 50 pounds and is up to date on shots. This dog is approved for homes with children ages 7 and up.

This dog is from a rural area and has not been exposed to traffic, noise, or groups of people. For now we are limiting placement to a standalone, single family home in a suburban neighborhood or rural area. As we learn more about the dog's time spent in foster care, we will evaluate if placement can be expanded to include a more urban environment.

Update: May 8, 2017: Jake and Ben #2 are continuing to do well in their foster home. They walk fine together with just a little pulling (probably would be better with easy walk harnesses). They have excellent house manners and do not need to be crated. They have done well in a suburban neighborhood (Rockville, MD) and haven't been bothered by or barked at passersby, cars, or deliveries. Actually, they still haven't barked at all. They've been good meeting people and dogs on walks. While it would be great for them to have a fenced-in yard so far they've only spent a few minutes in the yard before wanting to come back in. If they get walked multiple times a day, a yard wouldn't be a requirement. The boys were absolutely charming at the adoption event and happily accepted all of the love and attention from potential adopters. They can't wait to find their forever family!

Update: May 6, 2017: Jake and Ben #2 are continuing to do well in their foster home. They walk fine together with just a little pulling (probably would be better with easy walk harnesses). No accidents in the home. A little counter surfing to remind us that we need to tidy up. Update: May 2, 2017: These boys are such a sweet pair. They’re very friendly and greet everyone calmly and with tails wagging. They’re great with their foster’s kids (12 & 8) . They enjoy the company of their family and like to be with them. The pair sleeps soundly in the living room on dog beds. They are housetrained and do not need to be crated. They love being petted together and give kisses without being overly licky. Ben and Jake have been very quiet -- we don’t even know what their barks sound like yet. They can be walked together and would love to have a yard to play in. Ben and Jake have great energy and the zippiness of much younger dogs while having outgrown a youngster’s high jinks. Jake and Ben are delightful houseguests and would be a great pair for anyone lucky enough to adopt them.

Apr 27, 2017: Ben & Jake like to stay where the family is so they can get attention. Ben will put his head in your lap while Jake prefers to put a paw in your lap. They are happy to meet everyone with their tails wagging. Like getting their bellies and head rubbed. They are inside dogs that like to go outside. Jake doesn't like to go out in the rain while Ben thinks it great, he will go out and play in any puddles just for fun. When they got out of the yard they went swimming in a lake behind the house. They sleep on dog bed in living room They have been together since they were puppies must be adopted together. They would like a home with a yard where they can play and sunbathe.
Kids 7 and up, lived with three kids ages now 16, 13 9. Good with other dogs lived with smaller dog. Afraid of cats, lived with Peanut who head butted Ben and smacked Jake. Knows sit, down come. Pulls some on lead settled down after a couple of minutes. Good with an Easy Walk Harness. House and crate trained do not need a crate.

Ben & Jake are owner give ups due to divorce, neither could take them with them and asked us to help. They got Ben & Jake from a small rescue when they were 4. Dogs were kept in crates in garage and if they got too nosy he would take a stick and run it along the crates and yell at the dogs to be quiet. So now Ben & Jake are scared of sudden loud noise, thunderstorms, gunshots and fireworks. They want to be with you or will hide in a dark closet.
