My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Courtesy Post. GPRCI does not have custody of this dog. Please use the contact info at the end of this post if interested in more info about Tucker Joe.

Tucker is a 9 year old Alaskan Malamute mix (we think German Shepherd). " Tuc " has been in and out of our local shelter most of his life either by owner surrender or being picked up as a stray. Tucker was rescued by us when we stopped to get him out of traffic where he stood terrified in the middle of a four lane road. He was returned to his new owner of 2 days but ran again and got picked up by Animal control. The previous owner called us and asked if we would want him because he is an escape artist, and they transferred ownership to us. Tucker is a people dog.. All he wants is to stick with us. We have 4 other dogs, 2 male and 2 female, plus 1 cat. Tucker is a dominant male and therefore does not get along with our 2 males. He has no interest in the cat, and the female dogs don't seem to interest him at all. He weighed in @ 68 lbs for his first vet visit and.was given a clean bill of health. He was just neutered when in the county shelter and UTD with shots. We do believe though that Tucker may be deaf. He does not respond to any kind of sound, even snack bags being opened. We have been working with basic hand signals (come, sit stay). We believe it would be best for Tucker to be an only dog or be with someone who has experience with deaf dogs and Mals. He should definitely NOT be with other male dogs. His previous owner had 3 children, ages 4-10, and they said he was fine around them. But his deafness may make it harder for him to interact with them.

We hope to find a new home for him because he currently is not getting along with the males in our house and the females are now avoiding him. We have been able to intervene without any biting incidents but we no longer put them together. We are trying to help Tucker by fostering him until we can find him a forever home.

We do believe being a Malamute it is his nature to run. Having at least a six foot fence (since he can get over a four foot fence with no problem) is necessary. We have a six foot stockade which seems to discourage his escaping. He has shown no desire to escape.
