My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Most of you should probably pick another dog to adopt. No offense, but this is one special guy, and not just any application will do for him. Franklin was born and raised in a colony of feral dogs. Two of his brothers, along with other dogs, were all caught and brought into rescue, but he was the last one. So, for the first year of his life, he didn’t know humans, or if he did, it wasn’t usually under great circumstances. Franklin is approximately a year and a half old and weighs about 35 pounds. He is most likely a yellow lab mix, but is mostly all white.

He is the sweetest boy; there is not a mean bone in his body. Other than some food-guarding, the only thing you’ll notice is his fear. He is very cautious and afraid. But … he’s made incredible progress the five months he’s been in rescue. Franklin lives with other dogs, and gets introduced to strangers in his home on a regular basis. He will sit on the couch with his fosters and let them pet him (which he loves), but he won’t go over to the couch on his own. The fact that he’ll stay on the couch without running back to his crate right away is great progress. Coming out of his crate to lie on the floor next to it is huge for him, as is coming to the back door all on his own, without a leash, after being outside. Being greeted by a tail wag in the morning makes his fosters incredibly happy.

So, if you are still reading, you understand that Franklin is a work in progress. To get this far, he’s been on an anti-anxiety medicine, Composure, which is available over the counter and not very expensive. He’ll most likely be on it the rest of his life. Franklin is not going to greet you with kisses and cuddles when you walk in the door. He would probably back into his crate a little deeper. But he will continue to
make progress—in the smallest of baby steps—in the right home. Franklin hasn’t been tested with cats, but he is gentle with kids and everyone else he meets. He will stay in his foster home until we find the right forever home. Nobody is rushing him out the door. Franklin is far too special for that.
