My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is Silas. Silas is a 7-8 year-old 75lb male large-mixed-breed dog . . . he could be a Pit/Boxer or Pit/Mastiff cross, we’re not sure, but this love-bug, who curls himself into the smallest of spaces seems to think he is a lap-dog, so perhaps he is a giant Chihuahua! If you let him, Silas will happily share the covers with you on your bed. He is neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Silas is house and crate-trained. He was once saved from being euthanized during a stay in a crowded NY animal shelter but was saved and brought to Vermont where he enjoyed the life of a gentlemen-farmer. Silas had lots of space, which he shared peacefully with a menagerie of house and barnyard animals that included: cats, dogs, chickens, pigs, sheep and goats. Silas is submissive/docile when interacting with playful critters (like cats and dogs) and is non-reactive with others (like chickens, pigs and sheep). By every account, Silas won the lottery of second chance homes and was living the dream—but, sometimes, peoples’ lives changes. So, alas, Silas, through no fault of his own, is again searching for his forever home. Silas has never lived with children, but he frequently visits the home of a six-year old girl. During those visits, Silas is energetic, but calm around her and has enjoyed snuggles with her. He even participates in playing dress-up! And, is unguarded around his toys and food. Silas has taken classes in agility (which he did extremely well), nose-work, and obedience. He does great with classes, but not well with transporting. Silas has anxiety around car-rides, and reacts with barking and trying to climb in your lap, so he must be transported in a crate. Silas has also been trained with an e-collar, which has noticeably eased his anxiety, and when it is on, he will heel reliably and always come when called. So, now, the beeping noise is all that is required to reinforce the desired behavior. Silas has enthusiastically participated in skijoring races, where he loved pulling and running. He is also a fantastic jogging partner. However, he is a terrible swimmer, so if you like to canoe/kayak, leave Silas home for that activity. Honestly, the person who has to give Silas up is aggrieved and the next person who gets to keep Silas forever will be the lucky lottery-winner. Contact Potter’s Angels Rescue for your chance to win the heart of this gentle-giant.
