My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Doug was surrendered by his elderly owner who was unable to care for him properly. Unfortunately, due to this owner's poor mental and physical health, Doug most likely experienced a lack of stability for quite some time before coming into our rescue. Despite this difficult living situation, Doug is currently a very happy, friendly dog. He weighs 14 pounds and is 11 years old, but he acts much younger. He is energetic and playful; he enjoys playing with toys and humans. He loves to jump up on the couch, or a lap, for cuddles, and he is generous with kisses. Because his elderly owner lacked the strength to lift him, Doug was never picked up, and he reacts to this perceived invasion of personal space by biting. His foster mom has been working with him on this behavior, and he's made great progress and allows her to pick him up without biting even though he's still nervous about it. Doug loves his crate, is crate trained, mostly house trained (has an occasional accident), and pee pad trained. As is typical with any change in environment, he has had a few small accidents in his foster home, but is generally very well trained. We have been warned that he insists on using pee pads when there's snow on the ground. Doug also resource guards: he will growl or nip if another dog gets too close to "his" bone or high value item. He does pretty well with regular toys though. Again, his foster is working with him on this, but in general he enjoys the company of the other dogs in his foster home. He's learning how to be a dog a little bit more every day! He hasn't been around cats so we don't know how he will behave around them. Due to all of the traits described above, Doug must go to a home without children. Doug is a fun, happy dog, who needs a family who will be understanding and patient with him. In return, he will reward them with his joy for life and abundant affection.

***update***. Doug has come a long way in his foster home! He allows his foster mom to pick him up when needed, even though he really isn’t a fan. He still guards any bones he may get but does well with his food and other toys!***
