My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Stetson - Treeing Walker Coonhound - young (one year of age) - male/neutered - tricolor short coat - 60 pounds

Stetson is a lover and a total innocent. He is 60 pounds of houndly happiness, and he finds joy in the simplest of pursuits. Outdoors he plays exuberantly with the other two dogs in his foster home, and when he does decide to relax indoors, he blissfully settles onto the couch or his dog bed in a posture of utter relaxation.

Stetson has embraced foster care and training with eager pleasure. He understands the routines and rhythms of his foster home and has benefitted greatly from both canine and human guidance and instruction. Extremely tactile, Stetson revels in cuddling and all forms of physical contact. His eye contact is full, soft, curious and adoring.

Stetson inspires laughter and a protective instinct in his foster mom - he is so comically goofy and earnest in all that he does. Between his floppy hound ears and his long legs that still seem to surprise him, Stetson invests himself wholeheartedly in everything he undertakes, including being petted. At those times he will lean in and burrow his big head into his foster mom's lap while trying to insinuate the rest of his body onto her lap as well.

Although Stetson’s training is still at a basic stage, he is fully house trained, and touchingly proud of his newest accomplishment, “sit.” Still very much a puppy, he is curious, and nature has blessed him with a nose that can find anything, and a yodel that trumpets moments of great delight - such as mealtime. This “voicing” is characteristic of his breed, and while Stetson is not a reactive barker, his voicing at times of great enthusiasm might alarm those who are not familiar with a hound’s distinct voice.

In fact, for a puppy, Stetson is remarkably measured. He loves to run and wrestle outdoors with his canine foster sisters, and indoors can devote himself equally to absolute, almost boneless, repose. He is learning to walk on lead, and has been surprisingly cooperative in that respect. Outdoors and in, he greets every new dog and person as a long lost friend. He rides beautifully in a car, relaxing and falling asleep almost instantly.

Stetson is what we would call “green” at this stage of his training, but his earnest desire to please and learn, coupled with his capacity for faith and trust in people, make him a joy to teach. His sweet and honest nature, combined with his puppy-like innocence, will ask for continuing guidance and support as he masters more nuanced understanding of behavior. He has a genuine kindness and intuition, and he will reward his committed adopter(s) with limitless devotion and love.

We do not have any information on how Stetson would do with cats, but he would do very well in a home with another dog-friendly dog. Due to his affectionate clumsiness we are not recommending him for a home with very small children. Hedgesville Hounds requires a secure physical fence for hounds.
