My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and micro-chipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.

We at PDR firmly believe in the importance of obedience training, regardless of breed or size of dog, and have a clause in our adoption contract requiring adopters to attend and complete a basic obedience course at a facility of their choosing. Only in certain circumstances will we waive this clause, so please be prepared to attend dog school should you wish to apply for a dog through our program.

For more information and adoption applications please consult our website at www.pounddog.ca.

Let me introduce you to Hugo! He is an eight year old Yorkshire Terrier who came to us from a rural pound where he was an unclaimed stray. He weighs about 7 pounds although he could stand to put on some weight. Putting weight on should not be a problem for Hugo as he loves his food and treats. His coloring is typical of a Yorkie which consists of silver, black, and tan. He is a non-shedding dog and requires daily brushing to keep his coat in good shape. Hugo is a moderate energy dog. He enjoys short sniff and strolls around the block but will also not object to long walks either. He walks nicely beside you on leash and does not pull. He is curious of other dogs and people that pass by but does not show any signs of aggression towards them. He thoroughly enjoys all the smells that the outdoors have to offer.

Hugo absolutely loves to cuddle. He is the ultimate cuddle buddy and will constantly seek out a spot on your lap to curl up and sleep on. He is incredibly loyal and tends to attach himself to one person in the household. If more than one person takes on the caregiving and cuddling role with him he should bond equally. He loves to always be with you and will follow you from room to room like a shadow. He is quite affectionate and will smother you with kisses. He’ll also climb up your chest and paw your face for attention. He loves a good belly rub, and will always ask for more when you stop petting him. Toys don’t really intrigue Hugo, he prefers to play with your hand but also loves his Kong, especially when its filled with hidden treats inside.

Hugo is a sensitive little guy and responds well to gentle corrections. He comes when he is called but sit and stay is a work in progress. Hugo has eye lens thickening which is common in older dogs and causes his vision to be slightly compromised. He relies more on his sense of smell to get around and he sniffs everyone’s legs until he finds the person he wants to hang out with. Hugo was also found to only have one tooth in his mouth which was terribly infected and was therefore pulled to make him more comfortable. Even though he doesn’t have any teeth, he does just fine eating regular kibble and treats.

When Hugo first entered foster care, it was clear that he hadn’t been house trained. He has had a few accidents in the house but continues to show improvement in this area. He knows to go the door to be let out to do his business and is praised with affection and a treat when he does so. Because he is a little dog, he needs to be let out for bathroom breaks quite frequently. Anyone interested in adopting Hugo will need to supervise him while in the house in order to prevent accidents until he learns where the proper place is to go potty is. Hugo sleeps in his crate overnight (although he prefers to sleep in your bed). He doesn’t make any noise overnight as long as you’re within close proximity to him. Crate training during the day is a work in progress. In the beginning he made it clear that he does not like his crate but with continued training he is now able to be left in his crate for short periods of time. Hugo would therefore do best in a home where his owner is home a lot during the day. He doesn’t like being left alone and gets quite anxious when his people are leaving the house. Anyone interested in adopting Hugo needs to be prepared to continue his crate training and build his confidence so that he feels okay being left alone. Hugo’s foster parents work outside of the home and we feel he would do best being in a forever home where someone is around most of the day. He would be an ideal dog for senior or retired people. He just wants to be with his people so having someone home all day will be the best situation for Hugo. His new family or person will need to be ok with having a 7lb tiny shadow following them around all day though. Hugo will always be at his person’s side and will always be up for a cuddle or snuggle. He is very much a “velcro dog” and doesn’t enjoy independent time. He’s all about togetherness!

Hugo would not do well in a home with kids as he is very small and is easily stepped on. He doesn’t like loud noises and prefers a quite home where he can feel secure. Hugo does well in car and sits nicely in the passenger side or in the back. He doesn’t bark or whine during car rides and will willingly jump in the car to go. He is an excellent travel companion.

Hugo is a delightful little dog for anyone looking for a moderate energy dog to be their shadow. It is important to keep in mind that he requires a lot of attention and deserves a home where he can feel happy and secure in the fact that he will never be abandoned again. Hugo is a happy boy who would make a great addition to the right kind of family we are looking for. Could Hugo be the dog for you?
