One of the most satisfying aspects of rescue is witnessing a dog's profound transformation in spirit from fearful to joyous. Our Desi is a sublime example of just such a transformation.
Desi had been a stray for some time before Animal Control Officers were able to entice her to given up her independence. Once at the shelter, she was assigned to Maria, who patiently worked with Desi for over 90 days before the pup seemed to relax to human touch. She was one of those special girls, whose sad brown eyes revealed a timid soul unsure of her place in the world. When she came onto our radar, we happily invited her to join our Rescue, and, slowly, over the course of the first few weeks, Desi has blossomed into a relaxed and affectionate girl.
Desi is an estimated one year old German Shepherd, with the classic, short saddleback marked coat, Shepherd head shape, and black and tan colors. We also see a surprising brindle pattern on her chest and legs that suggests likely Boxer DNA. Desi is a large dog at 53 pounds, but is slightly underweight. She could easily fill out nicely over the next year to reach an ideal weight of 55 to 60 pounds. We recommend a grain free kibble diet with added Omega fats and high quality protein as well as nutritious natural treats like pieces of apple, veggies, etc.
Desi strikes us as an insecure girl, who needs strong leadership to help build her confidence. As a double dose of working dog, she will benefit from consistent obedience work to boost her self esteem and give her the sense of purpose that working dogs need to maintain balanced behavior. Desi is best suited to an adult home, with an active single or couple, who have the time to focus on her training needs. She has mastered all of her commands, and adopters should be able to get up to speed with Desi very quickly.
Desi would be a fantastic companion to an active single or couple, who can provide a fair amount of exercise and leadership. She
is reserved at first, but warms quickly to firm and patient human touch. Desi is easy to handle on lead and tolerant of other dogs. She could easily join a multi-dog home, with one or two calm, well trained dogs. We would like to steer clear of toddlers, because Desi might be spooked by their overzealous attentions.
Desi has had little obedience training, but she is responding nicely to basic commands. She seems to enjoy the training, as well as the training treats! Desi is a quick student, eager to please, and responds to both positive reinforcement and leadership techniques. Adopters should continue her obedience work, not only to foster good behavior, but to give Desi the mental challenge that she needs each day.
Desi has good house manners, and is house trained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident that will inevitably occur during her transition to a new home. She is in great health and has been spayed. Desi has been vaccinated for Rabies, DHLPPC (distemper, hepatitus, leptospirosis, parvo, parainfluenza, coronavirus), and she has been boostered as needed. She has had the 4dx test: negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. She has been dewormed, microchipped and is on preventatives for Heartworm and Flea/Tick.
