My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Minka is a very happy girl who loves being with her people. She was loved, is well trained and will fit into most family situations. She is 8 years old but still very active and healthy. Being a Boston Terrier/Boxer she would do best with children old enough to interact with her rather than very young children. She does bond easily and likes to be treated as a member of the family. She also has the cutest underbite! Minka is spayed and vaccinations are up to date. She currently weighs approximately 30 lbs. She is like a mini-Boxer!

Here is what her foster family had to say:

Minka is an active dog who needs constant interaction with her owners as she is full of love; she follows you everywhere you go. She does always welcome you with a jump up on your legs whenever you arrive at home. She is 8 years old, however does have a good energy level about her and will accompany you on long walks. She seems younger than her stated age. I would say that Minka’s energy level in general is moderate, there are high peaks and low peaks; she will never turn down a walk or fetch. Minka is fairly quiet in the home. She occasionally barks or whines but she does not sit by the window and actively bark at things outside.

Minka is a charismatic character, and will like to approach people and dogs alike. We do not have children, however I believe she would be good with children 7 or older. Apart from playing, she has not showed any aggression towards people outside of the house. Minka is not shy and in fact will always be sure to voice her opinion on someone new to the house. Abrupt noises such as a door opening and closing could set her off but only in an exploratory way, once she visually inspects the new individual she carries on about her day. We do not have any other pets so we do not know how she will interact with an established pet, however she has been fine when out for walks and will try to introduce herself. We have encountered other dogs who are quite territorial and Minka will stand her ground only after aggression from another dog. Minka will never instigate that kind of behavior. Minka does hate being on her own so another dog in the home or a home where people are there more often than not would be best. When you are home, she wants to be wherever you are including sleeping in your room at night. She really needs to be treated as a member of the family. She would not do well being left for long hours on her own.

Minka like other small dogs does have one cherry eye. Cherry eye, is quite common in small dogs. The prolapsed gland itself rarely causes discomfort or issue to the eye, so any repair is mostly cosmetic. You will often see it with Pugs or other small breeds. The vet did not find any reason to be worried about it in Minka’s case and we only mention it here just so that you are aware of it.

She is very well desensitized to city living and is not intimidated or scared from traffic, construction sites, or other loud sounds one might encounter outside. She absolutely loves being off leash at the park and playing fetch with her ball, her rubber bird toy, and lately one of our silicone oven mitts. We do not have a rope to play tug of war with, but she constantly wants to pull on a toy while you have your hand on it so she probably would love that too. She loves to be pet and will lay down for a good belly rub after a long day.

She has occasionally sniffed around counters that are close to her level but has never jumped up or tried to steal food off of someone’s plate. She will sometimes sit by you whilst your eating but does not whine or make any other cues instigating she wants your food. Minka knows quite a bit of tricks and commands. She knows, come here, sit, lay down, stay (although she can sometimes be reluctant), drop it, be nice, and either of her paws. She will also eat treats out of mid air and will twirl around on her hind legs. She will only go to the bathroom outside, she will come find you or if she cannot, will lay down or sit by the front door to signal you she needs to go outside. Minka is crate trained however we do not put her into it, rather we leave it open and if she chooses to, it is available. She prefers to lay down on her bed or on the floor to cool off. Sometimes at night because she likes to wander and whine to enter a bedroom, she will be placed in her crate but that has only occurred once or twice. She does not mind and knows that it is bedtime. In the morning, it will be opened and she roams around the rest of the day. She is leash trained and is very easy to walk with, mostly keeping beside you or slightly ahead. She will stop when you stop and will wait for traffic to pass before crossing.

Minka has never gone off too far to the point where I would be concerned. She has only left through an open door once and managed to cross the street but then waited for me to arrive so we could continue. She is very well trained in coming when calling her name and will not go too far off as she knows who you are. Besides the initial ride for her to arrive to us, she has not been in a car but I do not think she would have any issues. She loves the outdoors and will more than likely love being in a vehicle, especially if she knows she is going to a dog park.

As stated before, she does tend to like the presence of someone at home more often than not and I believe this is quite imperative that this is accommodated for her well-being. I am not sure of the best situation, however I do not think a single individual who works full-time without another dog in the house will be the best fit for Minka. She does require to be taken out quite often, and gets lonely if she has not seen you for some time.
