I am Suki and I am a 15 lbs, approx. 3-4 yr old terrier mix. The reason I am looking for a forever home is because my daddy recently passed away and I ended up at the shelter. I was very scared at the shelter and confused after losing my home. However a SAFE volunteer saw that I needed help and they came and saved me. I display good house manners and I am gentle in taking treats and in my demeanor. Although I am a small dog, I also love going for walks. If you want a couch buddy, I am your girl too. I am house trained. In short, I am a super sweet and small girl that just wants a family again who loves me and gives me the love back tenfold. How about it, will that be you? Will you fill out an application and come and meet me? If interested in giving Suki a forever home, please complete an application at www.safeanimalhaven.org. Thank you!
SUKI IS ALL OF THE THINGS LISTED ABOVE BUT CAN BE A NERVOUS LITTLE DOG IN NEW SITUATIONS. SHE WILL SOLICIT LOVE BUT HAS BEEN KNOWN TO NIP WITHOUT WARNING. SHE WILL NEED SOMEONE WHO IS DOG SAVVY AND WILLING TO WORK WITH HER IN A POSITIVE MANNER. SHE WAS EVALUATED AND IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT WITH TIME, ENRICHMENT, CONFIDENCE BUILDING AND TRUST, SHE WILL STOP NIPPING. HER NIPPING HAS STARTED TO DIMINISH IN HER FOSTER HOME.
Building trust is very important with her. Don't physically move her or pick her up. Let her initiate contact and let her indicate when she's had enough - stiffening, growl, moving away. Enrichment/confidence building will help - Find it, puzzle games, interactive feeding devices. Giving her some control over her environment- leave crate door open so she can go in and out, etc.
The hard part is, this needs to be started from the beginning in her forever home.
No kids. And she needs an active but tolerant dog if she is going to be placed with another dog. She needs a dog that likes to play but will also appropriately correct her when she gets rude.
