My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Update: 7/19: Roxy is now in a foster home. - It truly is amazing what a foster home can do for an animal. Roxy was getting very depressed in animal control. All she did was lay on her bed. She would go out and play in the backyard with us every once in awhile.

According to her foster mom she hasn't stopped playing since I dropped her off this afternoon. She is playing with all the toys in the basket and loves being on the couch and watching TV. Roxy weighs around 70 pounds.

Foster homes bring out the personality in a dog. When people come to animal control to view a dog that's available for adoption they don't get to see the true personality. When you open your home to foster a dog that gives people the chance to see the true personality of the dog. It really does make a difference. Please consider being a foster family. If not for pound pets Inc for your local area rescue. Thank you to all the foster families. Without you, we couldn't do this.

Let me tell you a little bit about her. Her back story is that she came in as a stray. Chipped but unwanted. She was adopted by a woman who wanted to train her as a support dog. We got photos of Roxy in the home laying on the couch, posing with the family. Then after a few months every other week she was wanting to return her. Never really a reason. She would then change her mind. The messages became very bizarre. This happened over and over. Then one day, Roxy had disappeared and she was frantic to find her. I sent multiple messages asking if Roxy had returned and never received any response. 2 months later we received a call that Roxy had been picked up in Alton and was in not so great condition. She had multiple wounds on her face, legs and body. They suspected she had been used in dogfighting and our vet agreed once we had her checked out based on her injuries.

Roxy has been with us almost a month and is almost completely healed from her wounds physically. She is still our sweet girl who loves to cuddle and is very gentle with people. She walks well on a leash and just likes to chill in her kennel. However, now when Roxy approaches a dog, she is very apprehensive. She goes in with her head down and tail wagging. She likes running along the fence line with other dogs and playing. However, once a dog barks or growls at her she will try to get to them. Once you call her she will quit and come to you. Roxy and I sit in the play yard and cuddle for most of her time outside. She just wants to be with a human so badly. Roxy would need to be the only pet in the home. She does like puppies (at least she likes Tilt). So that could be a possibility. She loves kids and is especially fond of females. She bonds very quickly.

If you would like to meet Roxy, please fill out an application located at the link below. We would love to find Roxy her furever family. She has had a rough beginning. Roxy is about 5 years old.

Most of the animals listed on here are in foster homes, but some are still residing at the Granite City Animal Control until they can be adopted or there is a foster home opening.

Pound Pets Inc Rescue can always use more fosters.

Pound Pets volunteers cleans the animal control building, we are the caregivers for the animals brought in. Once they come through the door, they become our responsibility. We photograph all animals and post to the Pound Pets Facebook page. We provide them clean kennels, beds, blankets, toys, treats, outside play time, walks and human interaction. We try to comfort the scared, keep the high-energy ones exercised and provide plenty of love and affection to make their time at animal control as less stressful as possible.

Sometimes they get reclaimed by their families and sometimes they don't. If they don't it is our responsibility to find the adopters, fosters or rescues to save them from euthanasia.

We get in sick and injured animals as well. They do not sit in their kennels or cages needing veterinary care. Once we see the need for care they are taken to the vet. Sometimes the illness or injury is minor and the city will cover the bill, Other times when it's not, we do. We do all of this on our own dime. We buy the food, the beds, the blankets, the toys, and all the other things that go into care for the animals. Sometimes things are donated and that is wonderful!! We pay the medical bills that the city doesn't. As with most animal controls, there is a limit on what they will do or cover. At Pound Pets, there is no limit. Broken Bones, Surgery, Parvo, Heartworm, etc., if the animal has a chance the animal is given that chance. This is not a shelter but an animal control.
