Edgar's Story...
DOB 4/14/17, As of 6/9/17 13.4 lbs
Introducing our "E" litter, available for adoption on June 17th.
Edgar, being the biggest of the litter, is on the clumsy side. .He is the most laid back ofthe litter. When the puppies are greeted by people, they will all run over, climb on them, asking for attention. Edgar hangs back, and just observes for awhile before he joins in.
Their Basset Mix mom was rescued pregnant, and arrived to A Journey Home with her six babies. A second breed guess, is Bernese Mountain Dog, although we do not know who the dad was.
He has been raised and fostered with children and other dogs, so does well with both. They will need basic training including housebreaking, leash and crate training. To achieve this and socialization , they will need someone home most of the day.

Thank you for your interest in adopting!
A Journey Home is a 501c3, all foster/volunteer based rescue. Our rescues are living with families in their homes. We do not have a shelter.
If you are interested in adopting, please email to request an application. After your application has been received and given a preliminary approval, you will be contacted by an adoption coordinator who will conduct a phone interview. Final approval will be granted following a successful meet and greet with the entire family.
A Journey Home does not do out-of-state adoptions on unaltered puppies. Spay/neuter surgery is not done on puppies under 6 months of age.
If adopting a puppy under the age of 6 months, we require that the adopter schedules the spay/neuter at our participating vet clinic when age appropriate. If the adopter chooses to use their own vet, A Journey Home will reimburse the adopter $50.
Our standard adoption fee is $300, payable by cash or check. The fee includes spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations, fecal testing, deworming, flea and tick preventative, a free vet visit at one of our participating clinics, and micro-chipping.
First time pet owners will be required to sign up for a puppy/training class at a place of their choice. There will be an additional $50 added to your adoption fee, which will be refunded to you upon proof the class was completed.
Please note that breed and size are our best guesses, while ages are estimated by our vets and are not guaranteed.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Edgar, a South Elgin Basset Hound/Bernese Mountain Dog puppy was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Basset Hound/Bernese Mountain Dog for sale in South Elgin, or seeking a Basset Hound/Bernese Mountain Dog puppy from a breeder in South Elgin.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in South Elgin already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a South Elgin breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Basset Hound/Bernese Mountain Dog breeders who help with Basset Hound/Bernese Mountain Dog rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in South Elgin paves the way for another one to be saved.
