My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello! My Name is Pip.   I’m a very handsome, 7-year-old, 85lb, male, Newfie/Lab mix.

I was rescued 4 years ago by my family from a critical situation. My people suspect that I was living with a drug dealer who kept me tied up. They also believe that the drug dealer used a shock collar on me, probably because I would bark when I was tied up.  Even now, after all these years, I still am very sensitive about my neck being touched.  Being treated like that is very hard to forget.

I'm a very good dog who is happy to be with people. I’ve lived with my family for about 4 years and everything has been fine until recently when I developed a fixation with cats and have been harassing the elderly cat who lives with us.  I think I really scared her and my family when I went after her – everyone got really worried about it.  There are also 2 other cats at the house and I don’t like them anymore either!   I wish I was still able to tolerate cats, because things have gotten very bad for me since then.  My family decided that is was best to look for a new home for me – without cats!    They don’t want to take a chance on something very bad happening.  It makes them sad and me sad too.  We love each other very much.

I’m a low energy guy  -  sleeping is my favourite hobby along with gentle walks and swimming.  I’m also not particularly anxious; although, sometimes I get scared when I am at the vet (I mean, who likes going to the doctors, right?).  I’m a pretty calm, laid back guy.  I do have a thing about rocks though!  I love them and I won’t let anyone take them from me!

When I'm walking, I'm great on a leash; I don't pull much.  I can be caught off guard when an unleashed dog approaches me though, and then I might pull.  Off leash, I ordinarily interact well with other large dogs.  Sometimes I bark when I am in the car when I know we are going somewhere really fun.  I just can’t control myself - my excitement gets the better of me!

Just to make sure I’m happy and don’t get stressed, I require a fair amount of personal space so apartment or condo living isn’t for me.  I need a back yard to roam around – that’s what I have at home.    I think it would be best if my new family didn’t have any small kids and for sure no cats or other small animals.  An older experienced dog owner would be preferred for me because I would love to spend our days together.  I’m not a dog who really enjoys being hugged or snuggled a lot.  It makes me very uneasy when people put their arms around my neck.   I still have memories about my early life.   I’m happy if people pet me and talk to me and hang out with me. That’s all I really need.

Finally, I should say that even though my current family can't let me stay with them, they want me to go to the best home possible so that I can have a great life.  They love me and know that I will be a loyal and loving companion for someone out there.  As I mentioned before, it breaks my family’s heart to let me go, but they are trying to do what is best for all of us.

I am healthy, neutered and housetrained.  My adoption fee is $350.
