My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sugar is a lovely girl. She is extremely gentle, good with everyone and a wonderful companion dog. She is approximately 2 years old and weighs approximately 45 lbs but is currently underweight.

Here is what her foster family had to say:

Sugar definitely lives up to her name. She is the sweetest dog ever. She is great with people of all ages, dogs of all sizes and couldn’t care less about the cats. She loves being around people and would be great in just about any family situation. She is affectionate and loves cuddles but is fine to just go lie down somewhere when you are busy. She likes to play with toys, and enjoy chewing on bones. She would be fine as an only dog but would really enjoy the company of another canine companion especially if you are leaving her for a full working day.

It is obvious that Sugar did have a litter of puppies in the not to distant past and she still appears to be regaining her weight back but otherwise she is very healthy and eats and eliminates well. She is house trained but hasn’t gotten to the point where she asks to go out so we just put her out several times a day along with our other dogs. She is crate trained and we have crated her at night with no issues, but other times we have left her in our room and she just sleeps on the floor and doesn’t bother you till you are ready to get up.

She is a very gentle dog especially with the little dogs and the only time she really gets going is when she is playing with a dog her own size but even then there is no tearing around the house. Her energy level I would say is low to moderate. She definitely doesn’t have the normal energy level associated with most Boxers. Although I know she must shed, it definitely seems very light and I have not noticed any hair left by her on anything.

The one issue we had with Sugar when she first came was that she would jump up on you. She does it in a very gentle way but as she is a bigger dog we have been working on teaching her not to do that and she is coming along nicely and doing it less and less. Sugar is the type of dog that is so unassuming and well behaved that there is a tendency to just let her be however she is very eager to please and I believe she would excel in obedience. I believe that if you wanted to put a little work into her training she has the potential to be an amazingly well trained companion. I also think due to her easy going manner and love of all people and other animals, that she would make a wonderful therapy dog.

Sugar does know sit and come but doesn’t appear to have been given any formal training and for the most part she is so well behaved we haven’t had any need to work on training with her. I have found when I speak nicely to her and am patient she does pretty much whatever I ask of her. She walks pretty good on leash but does pull a little and would need some direction to be perfectly leash trained.

Sugar is just a very sweet, gentle, loving and affectionate dog and I think she will be a wonderful family pet. She is not a dog that is going to excel in any active activity such as agility or anything like that. She is just more of a home body that likes to be around people and other pets, being part of the family and enjoying everyone’s company. She would probably make a good running partner as long as you weren’t looking to do any marathons…lol

Sugar would also be a great single’s companion and would be totally devoted to her person. She would also do exceptionally well in a family situation with more love to go around. I believe she would even be a good choice for a first time dog owner. Sugar will thrive in any environment where she is shown what is expected of her with lots of praise and positive reinforcement. She is definitely wanting to please and wanting to be a part of a loving family.
