My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

******Courtesy Posting for Love of Labs, please contact them for further information*****

Affectionate, kind and never-has-a-bad-day are the best ways to describe Averie, a one-year-old Great Dane Mix, who came to LOLIN after being surrendered to a Tennessee shelter.

Love of Labs enrolled Averie in basic obedience training program where she learned all of the necessary skills to be a good companion. She currently wears a Gentle Leader training collar and understands how to walk on a loose leash, basic commands such as sit, down, wait [at doorways], come [when called], stay [in position] and leave items [when told]. She is also house-trained and crate-trained. You can view a video of Averie walking on a leash at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giTnDtXlqDU

Because of her size, Averie has not been allowed on furniture. However, she is trained to lie down on the floor and will gladly relax next to you for all the petting and affection you are willing to lavish upon her. Averie plays well with her doggie sibling who she has been properly introduced to, but is not a dog that should visit dog parks and day cares.

We recommend that Averie be in a home with adults as she gets excited sometimes and might knock over a younger child. Averie loves to wade in water, though she is not eager to actually swim. She wants to be loved on all the time and is working on impulse control. The foster family’s daughter spent a day working with Averie using a clicker and treats. Very quickly Averie learned to lie on her side when given the command “settle.” A video of her working on that skill can be viewed at https://youtu.be/gAQ4l9Jtb3Y. She is a very smart dog who needs a family to continue to work with her.

Bradley Phifer, of Bradley Phifer Dog Training, is Averie’s trainer. He says she is an amazing dog with a BIG personality. He recommends an owner who has experience with large breed dogs and is willing, and able, to be proactive in giving her direction and continue her training. Bradley’s facility is located on the southeast side of Indianapolis. He has offered to talk with any potential adopters and assist the new adopter with one individual lesson to ensure she is successful in her new home.

Averie is up to date on all vaccinations, and has completed treatment for heartworm. She is ready for full activity.
