Meeko is showing us he's not quite as meek as we originally thought. This adorable Chihuahua is coming out of his quiet shell, proving to be - and we quote - "quite a pistol on walks." Quickly becoming a Pet Pal favorite, Meeko warms up pretty quickly to new people. His preference for getting to know you is that you meet him at his level, preferably that level being in your lap.

Younger children in general will be too much for him, but gentle children ages 10 and up might make good companions for him. A routine at home, where he knows what will happen and when, will prove useful as he settles into your lives. Meeko might start to show some interest in toy play so it will be worth it to get him a little basket of soft squeaky toys and little balls; encourage playing as he gets to know you.

Life as a stray dog was not the best experience for this sweet guy. Meeko likes to talk trash loudly to dogs he sees while he is on leash or in your arms. He responded well to a wise nanny dog, about his size though much older. He might be comfortable with another dog if they are carefully introduced and make a good match, but he'd be darn happy just having human laps all to himself to sit in.

Meeko found it hard to stay settled when left alone for a short time. He was able to go into a crate to find some yummy chews, but even that did not keep him for long. He cried (not so loudly) and paced. It would be great if someone were home most of the time and could help him slowly learn to cope with goings and comings.

One thing that builds a trusting relationship and builds confidence in a dog is an education. Start this fellow out in Scenting, where he will not have to deal with other dogs. Size has no meaning with this sport. You will find his abilities sublime. After some confidence building, Small Dog Classes will be helpful with general communications and bonding between you and Meeko.

Take some time to meet Meeko. He has a lovely, gentle manner and truly appreciates gentle, kind people. We meet so many of those here. Maybe you'll be next.
