Roxie-Referral
1. rescued a shelter dog, looking for family dog to take walks and hang out
2. came home with a brilliant athlete
3. smartest dog I've ever owned
4. 1 year old female shepherd mix
5. fully vetted and healthy
6. needs more than we can give her
7. must find new home for her ASAP
8. Does not chase cats outside of the house but chases cats inside the house
My kids and I adopted Roxie because she was already spayed and micro-chipped, and she had just been owner surrendered a few days before. The shelter told me she was good with cats. We have two sweet house cats.
We were hoping to adopt a healthy family dog for hanging out around the house and walks through the neighborhood. What we came home with was a brilliant athlete.
Roxie is so...smart... She came to us house-trained, great on a leash and knowing sit and down. I am by no means a dog trainer, but somehow Roxie has learned hand signals for sit, down and stay, and verbal commands for sit, down, stay, come, leave it, drop it. We're working on heel on the left.
Unfortunately, we can't keep her. It's really a disservice to a dog like this to be with a family like us. I've tried. I've put in the hours and done the work. She gets long walks every day, and we play and play. She loves fetch and tug-of-war and training time and seems to want to play for hours.
She's getting lots of love, play and attention, but it's at a cost to me and my kids. We love Roxie. She is such a good dog, but I have a full-time job, plus a part time job on the side, plus I'm doing this parenting thing on my own. I've tried for over a month now to figure out how to make this work, but I just can't find enough time in the day to take care of it all...
My son and I both have high-functioning autism/Asperger's, so the extra strain on me emotionally and physically has taken a toll. Roxie needs a higher level of structure and stimulation than I have the resources to give.
She is so smart and athletic that someone from Georgetown Search and Rescue met with me and evaluated Roxie for SAR. She has every attribute needed, except that she is food-driven and not play driven. They have to be 100% play-driven to become an SAR dog.
Does it sound like we shouldn't have adopted her? You bet. Is it too late to go back and change that? Absolutely. So, all I can do now is work really hard to find a good home for her.
We're getting desperate. I refuse to take her back to the shelter. I don't want her to end up somewhere chained to a tree in a yard
I will bring her to anyone who wants to meet her. I will pay a surrender fee. I will do whatever it takes to find her the right place to be. She is healthy and up-to-date on veterinary care, so she's ready to adopt. She even comes with four months of Trifexis, a crate, blankets, leash, harness, food, treats and toys.
