Meet Carmen!
We think this brindle beauty is a Lab mix about 5 years old -  maybe a little older as some of  the hair on her eyebrows is gray. When meeting new people she is calm and does not demand attention. She shows her caretaker gentle affection - her tail doesn't stop wagging whenever she sees her. Carmen is nonreactive to other dogs and would likely co-habitate with other dogs well as long as they are not pushy or overbearing - she seems to have no interest in playing with them. We think she would do best in a quiet, stress-free home with no young children and plenty of space where she can feel safe. She is shy and gentle and would be wonderful for an older person who would like a quiet companion to take for walks which she thoroughly enjoys. She doesn't pull on the leash and walks gently. She loves being outside and is content to go out and wander around a fenced yard. She is crate trained and appears to be house trained. She is slightly treat motivated which can help with gaining her trust and love. We recommend working with a trainer for ideas and help getting Carmen acclimated to her new home. She likes exploring new situations and environments as well as being with people and being petted.

If you would like to adopt this sweet girl, please fill out an application...you will be rewarded with a lifetime of love and the knowledge that you gave Carmen something she has never had - a home and a person who loves her. You won't find a gentler companion than Carmen!

Carmen's Backstory: Carmen is a laid-back stray from the inner city of Jackson, Mississippi. She and her puppies were found under an abandoned home. She was somewhat shy at first, but was starving and responded well when given food. Carmen was a wonderful mom to her pups but sadly 3 of the 5 puppies died from parvo. Her anterior teeth are worn down most likely from chewing on rocks and anything she could find to eat. We do not know if Carmen ever had a home of her own, but she is eager to find one one now.

Medical Note: This dog has been treated for heartworm disease with melarsomine injections. Treatment is completed and the dog has tested negative for microfilaria; she is cleared to resume normal activity and able to be adopted. An antigen retest is due in December 2017 to confirm successful treatment. Untreated heartworm disease can cause lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, and can affect the dog’s health and quality of life even after the parasites are gone, possibly presenting as medical complications and/or new conditions in the future. This dog showed no symptoms of heartworm disease before or during treatment. A good resource for more information on heartworm disease is: https://www.heartwormsociety.org/pet-owner-resources/heartworm-basics . Please check with your vet if you should have any questions or concerns about this condition, and discuss any concerns you may have with your SOS Adoption Counselor.

Adoption Fee: $425

**Additional info you should know -  For most of our dogs, we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix.  We get to know each of our dogs as an individual and do our best to describe and place them based on personality not breed label.   Some dogs may not yet be in New England, nor ready for immediate adoption.  There may be additional vetting, quarantine, waiting periods and/or fees depending upon your state of residence. If you have questions or concerns on any of this, you can discuss this with your Adoption Counselor.-+

Our Adoption Process...

Step 1: Find Fido

Review our online dog bios, email us if you have any questions. At SOS, we want to make the RIGHT right match, and that means helping you and Fido start a relationship – sometimes from a long distance.

Take your time, explore your options, consider your home and what kind of companion will fit in your lifestyle.

Step 2: Complete Our Application http://sosarl.org/aa/

Once you think you have found the right dog for you, please complete our online application.

At SOS, we don’t just want to make a match, we want to make the right match. To do this, we need your help; we know our dogs, but we don’t know you yet – our application helps us get to know you!

Step 3: Have a Talk

We will review the application and if it appears to be a good match for the selected dog, we will arrange for a time to talk with you over the phone.

Step 4: Meet Your Match

If, after the phone interview, the match seems to be a good one, we will be happy to arrange a meet-n-greet with you and the dog, if the dog is local. Meet-n-greets will be scheduled in the order they are requested.

Step 5: Application Screening

Once everyone has met (if the dog is local), and the match seems to be a good one, a designated SOS volunteer will check your landlord, vet, and personal references, as relevant. We may also require a home visit or adopter meeting.

Step 6: Finalize The Adoption

If the match is a good one, you will be informed via email of the adoption decision, and provided with instructions for how to pay the adoption donation and complete our adoption contract/addendum(s).

Step 7: Pick Up Your New Best Friend!

Once the adoption is finalized, congratulations! We will contact you to make arrangements to pick up your new family member!
**Please note that additional vetting, quarantine and/or waiting periods may be required depending upon your state of residence.

All of our dogs are age appropriately vaccinated prior to adoption. All of our dogs have been spayed/neutered and tested/treated for common canine disease.
