Kane is a special dog who is a member of our Managed Care Program at the Humane Society of Sedona. Meaning this special dog has a story that needs to be told and adopter who's heart is open to helping a struggling shelter animal. Please read on for his story...
Kane has lived in a shelter, almost his entire life - 7 years now. He was part of a cruelty case as a puppy in Maricopa County (MASH Animal Protection Unit) and after the case was closed - he languished in the shelter for 6 years. He lived in a jail cell with the lights on 24/7 with no bedding - he was chewing the beds given to him - due to extreme boredom. Continued stress led to behavior issues that kept people away from Kane, his excessive barking and kennel reactivity meant adopters and visitors just kept walking by.... year after year this was his life until a group of volunteers reached our for several long time shelter dogs sitting in the shelter - asking for help and a better life for Kane.
The Humane Society of Sedona is not a sanctuary or place for behavior rehabilitation for struggling shelter animals, by any means, but it is full of loving people who took a chance on Kane. Although it has been difficult for HSS to manage his needs and find him a home in a largely retired, luxury tourist town - he is LOVED. Love can do amazing things... he is now living in a large kennel (indoor/outdoor) with all of the soft beds, snuggly blankets, toys, daily walks and volunteer and staff friends he could ask for. We continue every single day to look for a loving home for this dog who is a true Hidden Gem. Please read below for more information about this dog who has been through more than most could even fathom living in his lifetime.

Kane is approximately 7 years old, a stocky, velvety Argentino Dogo mix with BIG floppy ears. This breed is known for being deaf and Kane is! He knows no hand signals or signs as deaf doggies should, but that is because he has had many new people in his life, time and time again over 7 long years. He is very smart, goofy, slightly aloof at times and attentive, especially with treats! He loves to lay in the sun, play with big fluffy stuffed toys and go on walks! He knows the basic command - sit - and is well adjusted to a routine schedule of potty breaks, walks and snuggles with his favorite shelter volunteers and staffers. Kane's disability keeps him on his toes when he first meets someone, he isn't sure if he completely trusts until he gets to know them. Anyone meeting Kane for the first few times knows that he will give a big bark to tell you to back off because he is feeling nervous about your intentions, but once he's comfortable he is your best friend and let's you know how thankful he is to have a new one with big kisses and excited sequels. That is a challenge in the shelter, as each new adopter is also a new person, greeted with a hefty bark! Instead of expecting him to sit perfectly with each passing stranger, we believe that Kane will find someone through social networking where the connection is made with a photo of his sweet face or this write up here.
Medically Kane has some slight arthritis in his back legs and potential neurological concerns as he drags one of his back toes with too much exercise. He is a great fit for gentle walks, where he can sniff to his hearts content! His nose takes him where he wants to go! To our knowledge, Kane has never played with another dog - ever. He is a lot of interest in other dogs, he's gentle and polite as he looks and moves on, nudging towards another dog if interested, but he has never had a playmate.
Kane has a high prey drive and would not be suitable in a living situation with small dogs or cats in the home. We also assume that kids, with their somewhat unpredictable gestures would be a point of stress for Kane so we are looking for an adult only home for him. There are many things we don't know about Kane in the home - how he would react to strangers visiting? Or is he potty trained? We cannot guarantee that a home is a perfect scenario him, that there won't be struggles or challenges and liabilities to face, but we can guarantee that this dog deserves a chance. We will not give up .

Every single dog or cat that enters shelter doors is special and has a story that will melt your heart and Kane's is no different. In fact, we think he is super special and completely deserving of a loving home. One that he has literally, by fact, never known or had. It is our plea and wish to find Kane a special person for him for the rest of his years. A chance every dog and cat should have. Sometimes it is hard to put into words how special something is... but this is an opportunity and we are doing all that we can to speak for Kane, on his behalf, asking for help. Sedona is a beautiful place is full of love and inspiration and we hope that by sharing Kane's story, someone will open their heart to getting to know this dog. Someone with patience, love and understanding of his needs. He is available for adoption locally or anywhere in the United States and transport can be arranged on our behalf. Kane's adoption fee is also sponsored and comes with one on one counseling with the shelter's manager, Liz Olson. Please contact her at, #928.282.4679 if you would like to meet Kane or learn more about him!

You can also help Kane in other ways too!! If you can't adopt Kane, but want to help please consider one of the following:
- Volunteer so that he can have all of the daily walks his heart desires, as he LOVES to get out of his kennel where he lives 24/7.
Share his blog (below) and share his story on your social media or with friends, family, other dog lovers.
Kane's Blog:
- You can become a Champion for Kane and pass out flyers at local stores and offices where someone might see it?!
- You can donate a bed, fluffy toy or snuggly blanket to Kane. He LOVES beds and will snuggle up with them at night, completely cozy and happy!

About Humane Society of Sedona

About Our Shelter...

Our Vision - Be Our Heart & Voice
Building a caring community where every adoptable and treatable pet finds a life-long loving home.

Our Mission
The Humane Society of Sedona is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of pets in our community and beyond. The Society has served the Verde Valley since 1966.

The Linda and Allan Brecher Center for Animals at the society is designed to allow every person, who desires the love of a pet, to adopt and provide a forever loving home. The Center provides quality care and positive reinforcement behavior training for adoptable pets. Passionate volunteers help walk and socialize the pets in our care. Foster pet parents are an important part of caring for pets outside the Center.

The Society provides vital services for pets and people alike through income-based affordable spay/neuter surgeries and vaccination clinics. Also, for families in need to feed their pets, we have a Pet Food Program.

Another public resource is our adult and youth educational programs.

The Society relies on community support, contributions, grants, bequests, investments, proceeds from the Society’s thrift stores and some fees for service in order to save pets’ lives.
