Big Gus really owns up to his name weighing in at over 100lb, but he is a big ol' teddy bear! He was roaming a neighborhood in October 2016 as a stray and was cautious of new people, a dedicated volunteer/foster went to the property with the help of shelter staff and was able to catch him. It seems he not had much of any experience on a leash and will often lay down when you put a leash on him, he is also not a fan of getting in the car/truck, staff did have to muzzle him to get him into the vehicle and to our facility to be examined. He drooled the entire time in the car so we believe he has not had much experience riding in a vehicle either. When his foster first brought him home she noticed he was very weary of new people and would just lay around minding his own business. He has now become very attached to his foster family and follows them around the house and pasture. However, when he first arrived at his foster he was uncomfortable being in a new home surrounded by new people, and he did growl once when his foster reached over him to grab something. Since this incident he has become much more comfortable with the foster family and has not growled again, while he was still adjusting to his new living situation his foster family made sure to move slowly around him and let him come around at his own pace. He lives in a house that has older teenagers and adults, as well as cats, dogs, horses, pigs, and other barnyard critters. Again, he is cautious of new people but does quickly get over that and will come and lay by your feet and relax. He pays no attention to the farm life on the property and enjoys walking with his foster up to the barn to care for the critters. He also lives inside the home with other dogs of varies sizes and even cats, and does spectacular with these pets. We know Big Gus is going to need a special family that can be patient and kind with him, but he has such a big heart we think that anyone who meets him is going to fall in love and devote the time and care he will need.
