About Humane Society For Inland Mendocino County

About Our Shelter...

The Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County is a non-profit adoption center, dedicated to rescuing and placing abandoned and displaced animals into loving, permanent homes. Animals who come to HSIMC and who are deemed “adoptable” – that is, healthy and non-aggressive – stay at the shelter until they are adopted.

During their stay at the shelter, animals are socialized through volunteer programs to make them more adoptable, as well as happier and more content while they await a new, permanent home. No animal of any age is allowed to leave the shelter without first being spayed or neutered, as well as vaccinated, tested for certain diseases, and other treatments deemed necessary to get them ready for their new homes.

HSIMC is not affiliated with the national chapter of the Humane Society, nor do we receive any funding from that organization. If you can, we encourage you to donate.

The Humane Society is located on 10 beautiful acres of riverfront property in Redwood Valley. We encourage visitors, so feel free to say hello.

Come Meet Our Pets...

Our available animals, complete with photos and biographies, are listed at Petfinder (www.petfinder.com). This site is updated regularly, and enables you to see exactly who is currently awaiting a loving home at the shelter.

Our shelter is open Wednesday - Friday from 1 - 5 pm and Saturday & Sunday 11 am - 3pm. Please feel free to visit us to meet our available animals in person.

Our Adoption Process...

Those interested in adopting one of our animals are required to fill out an adoption application and go through a screening process with one of our staff members.

Once you have found a pet we all agree is a good match, you can take the animal on a “Home Visit.” This is designed to be a no-pressure trial period, and typically lasts seven to ten days. If at the end of the visit you feel the situation is not working out, we encourage you to bring the animal back. If the visit was a success, we can complete the formal adoption process.

Our shelter’s primary goals in placing an animal are to ensure that 1) the animal be in its new home for the rest of its life, and 2) the animal's life will be filled with love, attention and proper care.

After the home visit, the fees are paid and the adoption papers are officially processed.
