My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sweet Hefty is a 3 year old female with a beginning story that will break anyone's heart. She was a kitty that we fell in love with during a routine visit to another Michigan shelter, looking for potential animals that would be a great fit for our MHS family. While there, we learned of her traumatic arrival to their facility. A passerby had heard frantic meows, and in trying to trace the sound, discovered them coming from a nearby dumpster. Inside the dumpster, the meows became louder, and were narrowed down to a tightly sealed garbage bag. Inside that bag, was a cat carrier, with poor Hefty trapped inside. Thrown away like garbage.

Thankfully, she was rescued from that horrible situation, where an even worse fate could have awaited her in the coming days.

Upon her arrival to our shelter, Hefty has thrived, realizing again that people could indeed be trusted. She has become very happy and comfortable in her kennel in our cat room, and enjoys following staff around during free time out of her little corner of the world. In getting to know Hefty better, we have discovered that she absolutely LOVES jingly balls- those are her pre'fur'red toys! She will swat and bat them about, and then scamper after them. Hefty is also, as we have found, VERY food motivated! Whenever we need to usher Hefty back into her kennel after some free time, just a simple rattle of her kibble, or opening a can of wet food, will easily entice her where she needs to be. :)

We learned shortly after her arrival, that Hefty was suffering from a significant urinary tract infection- one strong enough that it had undoubtedly been left untreated for quite some time. Putting the pieces together, it's easy to assume that Hefty's condition (which sometimes can result in a cat missing the litterbox or avoiding it altogether), is what prompted a frustrated 'owner' to retaliate and toss her aside. Proper medication (when needed), along with her prescribed C/D cat food, helps to keep the urinary tract infections at bay (although in times of stress, she may develop flare ups, with a system that overreacts). So sad that rather than taking the time to give Hefty the care she needed, she was instead tossed out. Happily with the right food to keep her insides happy, we have not noticed any incidences of UTI's in over two years!

Hefty is a great female who deserves a chance to know what a real caring home and family is all about.
