My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

"it's not that bad..."

so begins the story of Amashi or Mashi Mashi (meaning "strength of the Lord"). Surrendered to MHS, Mashi Mashi is sporting fresh wounds and old scars from a life led outdoors, and the resulting altercations with other animals during his travels. Make no mistake, he was considered a family pet, but he was not allowed inside, where he would have been kept safe from repeated fights. The wounds he suffered were "too gross" to be able to cross the threshold from violence to sanctuary and security.

"it's not that bad..."

was the declaration that accompanied Mashi Mashi as he arrived in his current condition, with two open and raw wounds on his neck, along with evidence of previous injuries which include a crumpled cauliflower ear, as well as a horrific facial trauma in which surgery was required to repair skin that had been ripped off during an altercation with another angry animal. Part of Mashi's surrender was due to the owner not wanting to continue to pay hundreds of dollars for vet care with each new fight injury he might suffer. We immediately rushed Mashi to one of the wonderful vet clinics we are fortunate to partner with, where his wounds were cleaned and treated. Flea topical was applied to help treat a nasty infestation of the painfully itchy parasites. During his visit, he was tested and shown to be positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), an incurable disease which affects the immune system, making it harder to fight off bacteria and viruses, which in turn can allow normally simple afflictions to gain a stronger hold on the body and develop into more severe illnesses.

"it's not that bad..."

Those words blanketed a modest cat who lay defeated in his carrier, weary from a life spent on the defensive- wondering where the next strike would come from, which animal would be a friend vs foe, whether food would be afforded to him or if he would have to scavenge for whatever measly scraps could form the semblance of a meal to his hungry tummy, etc. Worn out from 6 years of that existence, Mashi surrendered his guard to the warm and caring hands of MHS, who dove in and smothered him in TLC. He just melted into our arms as we gingerly removed him from his carrier and placed him inside a cozy kennel.

Mashi should be a very hard edged soul, not wanting to trust, and bitter from a life spent receiving whatever blows came his way. But he is not. Instead, Mashi is easily the most loving kitty you will ever meet! He adores being pet on his head and rump, and has a purr motor ready to fire up at a moments notice. Mashi gets so excited for any amount of love shown his way that he will flop his whole body on your lap, in your arms,,,anywhere close to you where he can thoroughly soak up the warmth and attention his hurting soul has been aching for.

"It's not that bad..."

Now Mashi is in our care and can finally for the first time in his life say that he is safe. No more will he have to worry about encounters with other animals, adapting to changing weather, or trying to locate his next meal. Mashi has a kennel afforded with plushy blankets and beds; a roof and four walls to protect him from the extreme elements, and meals of dry and canned cat food brought to him every single day. Most importantly, Mashi now has people to love him. His battered path brought him here, and upon entering our building, saw his fate change and brighten for the better. From here on out, Mashi will forever be surrounded in love.

Mashi, it was that bad before, but now, it's all good. <3
