About Winona Area Humane Society

About Our Shelter...

MISSION

The purpose of the Winona Area Humane Society is to prevent cruelty to animals, to relieve the suffering of animals and to provide humane education throughout the Winona area.

It is the policy of the Society to provide humane care and treatment for animals needing protection in the area served by the Society; to seek to return lost animals to their owners; to seek suitable homes for animals without owners. The Winona Area Humane Society actively works against breed specific discrimination. The Society does not and will never discriminate against any animal based on breed, type, color, height, weight, or disability. In its care and disposition of animals, the Society follows all standards prescribed by the Humane Society of the United States.

ABOUT WAHS

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. WAHS relies on donations and the fees we collect to cover the costs of caring for the animals in our possession and for the costs of operating our facility. WAHS is governed by a board of directors, employs 11 people, and relies quite a bit on volunteers to meet our animals’ basic needs and help customers during our open hours: Board of Directors Staff Members Get Involved

FUNDING

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and rely on donations and fees to provide for the care of animals and shelter operating costs. The areas we serve compensate us for initial medical care and five to seven days of boarding for each animal. Any additional medical costs, daily care, and spaying or neutering is covered by us. Despite having “Humane Society” in our name, we are not a branch or subsidiary of either the Humane Society of the United States or the American Humane Society. We do not receive funding from either group.

SERVICES

1. Boarding and medical care for abandoned and stray animals. Since we are a no-kill shelter, we do not set a limit to the amount of time an animal can stay at our shelter.

2. Advertising of stray cats and dogs received by the Society.

3. Spaying and neutering of animals in our care.

4. Placement of stray and abandoned animals needing new homes.

5. Boarding and placement of adoptable animals in the event the owner is incapacitated and is unable to continue to care for them.

Our Adoption Process...

We require an application to be filled out for all adoptions of the animals in the shelter. It will ask for your current vet if you have a current pet or have owned one in the last two years. It will also ask for two personal references that have seen you with animals before. We do call these people. We do also a simple background checks on our applicants. If you rent a house or an apartment we do ask you have your landlord fill out a sheet to make sure they are okay with you having an animal.
