My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Cody: ~12 month old neutered male yellow Lab, ~ 55 pounds

And they call it puppy love…
Looking for lots of love in a lively puppy package? Have endless energy (because Cody sure does!)? Love a project? Then Cody may be just the pup for you!

Cody was surrendered to the shelter as the result of an abuse case, and the shelter contacted Lab Rescue to find him his new, loving, forever home. This is one fun, loveable, energetic boy! He has a little training (Sit, Lie Down) and is learning to walk well on leash. He LOVES the ball and playing fetch, and will willingly drop it for you to throw again…and again….and again! He seems to be fine with other dogs, no signs of aggression, but he needs to learn better manners, as he can be overwhelming in how he greets them (and how he greets people too!). He’s learning how to walk well on a leash, and what it’s like to live in a home with clear rules, consistent leadership and love. He’s a very typical of a Lab pup at this age, with everything that entails.

What his foster family says about Cody:

This energetic lanky guy is a true sweetheart! He wants to please, is learning new things everyday, yet still is a puppy at heart!

He is SMART and catches on quickly with consistency and repetition. Cody didn't have much exposure to rules, or obedience. He is not housebroken nor has he spent much time inside. We are working on that in short intervals, thus everyday is a new experience! He adjusted very quickly to an Easy Walk Lead Harness on a short lead, and is doing better each day on his walks. He recently saw his reflection in a window, along with seeing a television - and likely any puppy had a lot to say about that!!

He is being crate trained and sleeps through the night very nicely. He is comfortable in his crate and enjoys his 'down time' with soothing Jazz music in the background ! He is very quiet in his crate and doesn't fuss much, unless he needs to go out.

He LOVES playing ball, and will return it, drop it, and if ignored try to put it on your lap or chair! He knows Sit, Stay, Down, and Leave It. We have taught him entry/exit door manners - but it may take a few commands especially if we are going outside to do 'business'.

He hasn't had much exposure to riding in a car, other dogs/animals or a lot of people.
He is very treat and food motivated, and is enjoying his 3 meals a day. He is a love, and is absorbing all the positive love and leadership each day.

What we want for Cody:

The right family for Cody would be one who has experience with young large dogs, including experience with training, and has the time to provide vigorous exercise (45 to 60 minutes or more twice/day, at least for now!) which could be a brisk walk or run, include a session of Fetch, or even swimming, as long as it is enough to wear him out. Did we mention he has a lot of energy? A tired puppy is a good puppy! Because he’s a puppy, our preferred home for him is one where someone is home most of the time. He may chew non-dog items, so he’ll need supervision as he learns what it’s like to be an indoor member of the pack, and what’s ok to chew on and what’s not. The good news is that he loves his Nylabone, which seems to help him chill out. Cody will do well with a family that has a loving, consistent pack leader. He would not do well in a family where the humans are gone during the day.

We think Cody would be happy in a home with dog savvy older children (8 and above) who can handle his size and his energy. He’s a bit underweight at the moment so expect him to add 5 to 10 pounds over the next few months.

Cody is neutered, current on vaccinations heartworm negative and on preventive, and micro-chipped.

Cody is located in Los Gatos.

If you are interested in adding this lovely boy to your family (or know someone who might be), and have the time, energy and experience to work with a great pup like Cody, call Rescue Rep Debbi 408-613-2044 or email dragonflydebbi@gmail.com. Please watch Cody’s video before contacting Rescue Rep Debbi!

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
