My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adam is a young, healthy, energetic boy with a zest for life! Adam was found as a stray so we do not have any history prior to the shelter. He is approx. 1.5 years old and weighs around 68 lbs. Adam is one happy boy and he is longing for a family of his own. He's extremely loving and adores people. He is crate trained, UTD on vaccinations, house trained, heart worm negative, neutered, microchipped and he spent 4 weeks in an intensive board and train program where he learned lots of skills and received training on helping him focus and calm his wild, puppy energy!

Child appropriate? Adam would do best in a home with children over the age of 10 primarily because he's high energy and can get very excitable and jump around and his tail is very strong and could hurt a small child accidentally.

Other dog appropriate? Yes! Adam socialized with many dogs during his board and train and did well with many. He was able to take corrections from other dogs when he got a little annoying and the other dogs told him to knock it off. We think he'd be best with a female dog and one who likes to play and have fun and wouldn't mind an annoying little brother :)

Cat appropriate? Because Adam is pretty focused on chasing, we do not think he'd do well with kitties.

How is he with strangers? Adam has met many different people and done well. He sometimes can become nervous and insecure but once the person greets him with a happy voice and treats he's all wiggles. He can be a bit shy at times but he's always done well with strangers.

What is his play style? Adam is a high strung, rough and tumble boy. He can get a little crazy with his zoomies and get overexcited quickly so he needs to be redirected to calm down. He loves to wrestle with other dogs and with people he can get a bit jumpy if overstimulated during play. He does respond very well to being told to calm down.

Does he like toys? He loves toys! He never destroys them and prefers to carry them around with him. His toys are somewhat of a security blanket when he becomes shy too. He will grab a toy and run around shaking his head and making grunting noises with glee! He loves to play fetch, although hasn't learned to bring the ball back. He pretty much likes any toy he's been given.

Does he like water? Adam loves water! He loves playing in the hose and will run through a sprinkler for hours! He jumps and barks and looks like he's having a blast. He also loves kiddie pools. Adam hasn't been to a large body of water so we don't know if he'd like that but he appears to have some Lab in him so we think he'd go bounding in once he figures out it's safe.

Does he like car rides? Adam rides fine in the car but he hasn't gone many places for long distances so we aren't 100% sure how he'd be for a long journey.

Exercise level needed? Adam needs daily exercise to help him calm his mind. He is young and has a lot of energy so he will need daily walks, running around in the yard, and space to play. He might make a great running dog as well. He will need a family committed to giving him adequate exercise.

Behavior issues? Adam does not have any specific behavior issues but he spent 4 weeks in a board and train to help him learn to calm his energy. He can get very high energy and out of control when people overstimulate him with high voices and loud or fast activity. When this happens he can be a bit beserk and can become very jumpy and occasionally mouthy. This has been easy to manage by simply giving him adequate exercise, using a calm voice and not creating a high energy stressful environment when with him. He did awesome in his board and train and really has become a good boy. His adopters will receive two free training sessions with his trainer to help them learn what Adam needs to keep his energy in check.

Medical issues? None known.

Skills? Adam knows sit, down, wait, free, park it and is working on shake and touching his nose to your hand upon request. He's super smart and asking him for behaviors helps him focus.

Special/endearing things? Adam is unbelievably sweet and lovable. He's so endearing to be around because you can tell just how much he adores people and wants to please them. His heart is so, so big. He's extremely lovable and will lean up against you and then roll over for belly rubs. He will bring his toys over and ask you to play with him and he even shares his bones. He is a very sensitive boy so he needs someone to use a soft voice with him because his feelings easily become hurt if you raise your voice. He is so happy too. He just loves to run and play and he's happy pretty much doing anything as long as people are around. He is good at being alone too and doesn't bark much at all. Adam was out of chances when we met him at the shelter but we saw a boy who just needed some love and attention and he needed to be taught manners and that when he behaves, he gets yummy treats. Once he learned this he turned into a marshmallow who more than anything in the world just wants to love and be loved.

Ideal home: Adam's ideal home is one with experienced dog people who can help Adam continue to work on harnessing his energy. He needs a home where he can get adequate exercise daily and where he can be a true part of the family. He hasn't likely had a home in his entire life and sadly, he now lives in a kennel because there are no available foster homes for him. When out of his kennel he runs right to the house to try and go in because he so much wants to be a house dog. Because of this, he needs a home that is willing to let him be that house dog. He needs a family who understands dog behavior and can be patient and kind and utilize positive reinforcement training methods. He would do well with another friendly, dog, preferably female, because he does enjoy playing with other dogs. Overall he needs a home that is calm without a ton of stimulation because that is his main struggle. A noisy, busy home would likely be too much for him. We are hoping there is a home out there who will take the time to get to know the sweet boy we see every day. Adam is truly one of a kind and whoever adopts him will be a very lucky family :)
