My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

I have an Adoption Pending but hope you will consider one of our other great dogs. Thank you!

8/22/17 Foster Update: Joey is now with his northern foster family and is settling in nicely. He is shy and timid at first, but warms up quickly. He was very tentative when he got off the transport and wanted only a lick of water, and had to be lifted into the car. But thanks to the confidence building efforts of his southern foster, he is already greeting his new fosters with tail wags and super-enthusiastic wiggles! Joey's fosters discovered, the first night, that Joey has had enough of his crate which he communicated by crying and whining. On the second night, instead of crating him, they confined him to the living room. Joey showed his appreciation by sleeping soundly (and quietly) with no issues at all. They have discovered that Joey likes to sleep on his back with all 4 paws in the air! Joey is eating great, enjoying all of his food as well as the cat's, to whom he pays absolutely no attention. He loves exploring the fenced back yard and comes right to the back door when he is ready to come in. As we often see with dogs who come up from the south, Joey was afraid of going up a full flight of stairs. Initially, he would only put his front paws on the first step and would go no further. But late one evening he apparently got lonely when his foster mom was upstairs working in her office, and ventured up the stairs all by himself! It took a bit of coaxing to get him to come down, the next morning, but he did and is now managing the stairs better each day. Joey craves attention and his fosters will be using that as motivation while they help him learn some additional commands and fine tune his leash walking skills. He doesn't pull on the leash at all but clearly doesn't know how to walk on leash, as he keeps bumping into his fosters and crossing over right in front of them. Not just another face in the crowd, Joey has a unique look, with pink-rimmed eyes, a pinkish-brown nose, pink lips and pink paw pads! He has a Lab-like head but smaller and his fur, a rich golden color, has a six inch wide swath running down his back that's a slightly different texture and color than the fur on his flanks. It has only been a few days, since he arrived, but his fosters already tell us, "he's wonderful to have around"!

8/12/17 Foster Update: Joey had a check up at the vet's yesterday. Although he was not a fan of getting in the car, he was quiet once we got going and rode nicely. He got a good report card and the vet staff said whoever gets him will be adopting a good boy!

8/7/17 Update from Joey's foster mom: Joey is becoming a dog! Sometimes we even call him "Mr. Dog." :-) He came to our house so shy and unsure and now he is very comfortable in the house. He is more comfortable coming and going through the door to go inside and out. Joey comes when called and has not tried to escape from the yard, but he does not have any unsupervised outings. He has had no accidents in the house but I still crate him at night and when I am gone, and he is OK in the crate. Joey found the toy box and brought all of his favorites to his bed. He likes to bat at our geriatric dog, Mae, to initiate play, but she is too old to be interested. She does let him lay beside her though to snuggle. Joey has become more interested in food. He greets us when we come home and he likes being near his humans. He is not a big fan of a full body hug, we bump heads and rub noses or ears, and we do it face to face. When Joey goes to his new home, he will take a few days to settle in but will be a wonderful companion in time!

Joey's Story: Joey is a handsome 4 1/2 year old boy who we believe is a Golden/Lab mix. He is so very sweet but a bit on the shy side until he gets to know his humans. He is good with other dogs and is a nice house guest. This is a dog who is not to be missed and would do well in most situations. His plush coat is the most stunning shades of golden and his eyes are a beautiful amber color. Trust us when we say his photos do not do justice to how gorgeous this fellow is in person!

Joey has been brought up-to-date on his vaccinations, neutered, and is now micro-chipped. He is under treatment for heartworm because his former owner did not keep him on heartworm preventive.

Because Joey had been picked up in the rain by animal control in Crowley, LA, this fine fellow was initially dubbed the "Crowley Rain Dog." Crowley is noted for its annual International Rice Festival and was a major center for rice harvesting and milling. The city's motto is "Where Life is Rice & Easy." We hope that moving forward, Joey's life will always be "rice & easy!"

Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to continue the rehabilitation we have begun. If you have a quiet home and would like to be part of Joey's rescue story, and you have already been approved for adoption through SGRR, please contact Donna to be considered to adopt Joey.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
