My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello Gals and Guys!!! My name is Mahi and I am a beautiful Umbrella Cockatoo. I'm around 10 years of age, still pretty young, since I can live to be 60 years old or even older!!! My previous Mommy thinks I may be a female as I lay about 4 eggs a year, but that hasn't changed my personality.

I am making some progress in getting to know my foster Mommy. It will take some time and lots of patience as I was use to my other Mommy. I like everyone, but please be aware, I do bite. You just need to not rush me.

With my other family I was always out of my cage, except at bedtime. I had a whole area that was just mine. YEAH!!! I also use to sit on the kitchen sink when my other Mommy had me and just enjoy being around her. Now, I still love to be out of my cage and just "hang out" on top of it and see what is going on. At times I will crawl down and just leisurely stroll around the house. If you have other pets such as dogs or cats, you will need to be very, very careful so that they do not hurt me. I must be always watched closely. I do have an outdoor perch which I truly love, but it is in bad shape. Perhaps someone would like to send me a new one?

I have a secret to tell you.... I LOVE to chew furniture!! You will really have to keep a close eye on me at all times when I am out of my cage. It would be best if I had some large wooden toys to chew on. If you adopt me, please keep me supplied with some big wooden chew toys or bird-safe tree branches. There are lots of trees native to FL that are safe for me to chew on!. It's best to have at least 3 or more wooden toys in my cage as well, to keep me from getting bored. My foster Mommy says I love my toys, especially the ones I can shred.

My foster Mommy is really trying to work with me on my plucking and picking. Here again, please have patience with me, I'm a little scared and confused right now. Respecting my limits will make me feel secure. Insecurity and boredom are big reasons why we pluck!

As with most Umbrella cockatoos, I can be LOUD!!! Usually I am very vocal in the morning and again at dusk. I will let out with some VERY LOUD high pitched squawks. This is a trait that we Cockatoos have - it is just in our nature. Because of this I will not be suitable for apartments, condos or duplexes. I do talk and will probably be able to learn a lot more words.

My foster Mommy has been feeding me these yummy Natural Zupreem pellets. We are going to start working on fruits and veggies, as they are very important to my diet. Nuts are good too, but NOT peanuts as they are very bad for us birds. If you come to visit me, my foster Mommy will let you know which foods I like the best. My favorite treats right now are Avi Cakes.

This was just a little bit of information about me, Mahi. Hopefully if you are interested and think that I would be a great match for you and your family, you will fill out an application and possibly be able to visit me. Below is the link to my Amazon wishlist. Please take some time and look over this list. Maybe you'd like to send me some of these items on my wishlist? I sure would like that!!
