My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello, my name is Benji. I am a twelve year old, seventeen pound maltipoo. I have been well loved by my owner up until a few weeks ago when he passed away. Sadly, the rest of his family did not want to take care of me, so they abandoned me at the vet’s office. If Home At Last Dog Rescue(HALDR) had not taken me in, I would have been euthanized because I am old, and have some medical conditions.
I might as well tackle the elephant in the room and tell you what my medical conditions are. I have hypothyroidism, arthritis, diabetes insipidus (not to be confused with insulin dependent diabetes), some liver problems, and some back issues. Now you might be thinking that I am a lot of work to take care of, but my foster mom would disagree! She tells me that of all the dogs she has fostered for HALDR, I have been the easiest to take care of.
Since the first day I arrived at my foster mom’s place, I have acted like I have lived there all of my life. I spend my days strolling around the house, and whenever I get tired, I simply plop down any place for a nap. I like going for walks outside too, especially to sniff the grass and shrubbery. However, if you don’t feel like taking me on walks, that is fine too, as I can get all my exercise from walking in the house. I am also fully potty-trained, so you can just open the door to the yard/balcony to let me do my business, and then I will automatically go back to the door and wait for you to let me inside. Also, I am able to go to bed for 8-9 hours without an accident, and currently sleep nicely in bed with my foster mom. These traits make me well suited to live in either a house or an apartment.
I consider myself a foodie. After gobbling up my own food, I always try to eat the cat’s and other dog’s food as well. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen peeking inside the fridge, and staring up at my foster mom in hopes that she will give me a treat. Even though this behavior is adorable, my foster mom has decided to put me on a diet because of my love of food. I am currently eating a mixture of hypo-allergenic dry and wet food. Because of my diabetes insipidus (also known as water diabetes), I drink a lot of water and should be let out to the bathroom every 3-5 hours.
I also consider myself the man of the house, and will occasionally bark at strangers and the cat in the house. In reality, I am all bark and no bite, and have been able to live peacefully (mostly) with the cat, and have had no problem living with the other dog. Although I am very easy going and adaptable, I think my ideal forever home would be a place where there are no cats or rambunctious, large-sized dogs. I would make a good companion for an older person who is often at home; or a family with older children who will handle me gently, as I am a small sized senior.
In regards to my medications, I currently take Ursodiol once a day for my liver problems, and take Levothyroxine twice a day for my hypothyroidism. These are both oral tablets which I immediately gobble up, since my foster mother puts them inside a spoonful of wet food for me. Other than having to take these two medications, the vet says that I am in excellent health. She says that my good health is a testament to my previous owner’s love and devotion to me. The medications cost approximately $30 per month.
I know that if my owner were still alive, he would be heart-broken to know that I have been abandoned by the rest of his family. I also know that my chances of getting adopted are slim, since most people would rather have a young cute puppy, than an elderly gentleman like me. Nevertheless, my foster mom is confident that with my good looks, and my cheerful easy-going nature, someone will open up their heart to me. I hope she is right.
Yours Truly,
Benji (The Elderly Gentleman)
