My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

IDGSR WELCOMES DRAKE INTO THE SAFETY OF THE RESCUE!!!!

Drake is a handsome German Shepherd puppy who is approx. 7 months old. He came to us as an owner surrender from a family who were not able to care for him. Drake is in a loving foster home and here is what his foster mom has to say about Drake:

"When Drake arrived to our house, it was obvious no one had worked with him and taught him any manners and what was right/wrong behavior. We were told Drake was 6 months old so he was born sometime around January 2017. Drake is high energy and never learned how to be a puppy and was not able to exercise and burn off some energy because he was either chained or crated and no one interacted with him. Drake is a very loving, wiggle butt, tail wagging boy and just wants to be loved.

Weight: 64.7 pounds (weight at vet on August 3, 2017)

Housebroken and Crate Trained: Drake is crate trained but he would much rather be out with his people. At bedtime, his foster mom calls Drake over to the crate, opens the door, Drake walks right into the crate and is given a treat, then Drake sleeps through the night without a peep. Since Drake is still a puppy and is working on his manners in the house, Drake does not have free roam of the house at night or when his foster parents are away from home. Drake seems to be housebroken because he has not had an accident in the house and he has gone to the back door and stood when he needs to go outside to potty.

Kids: Drake has been around his foster parents’ grandkids (ages 5 & 8) and he loved playing with the kids and running around the yard with the kids. Drake is big, is still a puppy and has a lot of energy so he had to be reminded that jumping around the kids is not appropriate behavior. For this reason we would recommend older kids but not toddlers. He would “sit” for the kids when they told him to and then they would throw his toy and Drake would go get the toy and then play keep away from the kids.

Cats: Drake chases the cat at his foster home and barks at the cat so no cats.

Dogs: Drake gets along well with the foster family’s 7 year old, neutered, 85 pound, male black lab. Drake is learning how to appropriately play with the foster family dog and is doing well with direction. At the vet office, Drake met a couple of dogs in the lobby and Drake was happy and wagging his tail and just wanted to play with the other dogs.

Favorite Toys: Drake absolutely loves to chew on bones (knuckle, center, femur, dino) and loves to play with soft squishy squeaky toys (Drake is learning how to squeak the toys and often throws them in the air and entertains himself). He also likes to play with large squeaky Kong tennis balls and Large Kongs (Red or Black). Drake is learning how to play fetch and bring the toy back. Drake has learned how to “sit” before his toy is thrown. Drake is not protective of his toys/bones and shares them with the foster family dog.

Water: Drake has not been in a pool. When Drake was given his first bath he held still and part way through the bath, he laid down and let his foster mom rub shampoo all over him before he stood up and shook.

Riding in Car/SUV/Truck: jumps right into the vehicle and rides in the vehicle like a good boy.

Other: Drake is learning how to gently take his treats and is doing a wonderful job of not “grabbing” them. Drake is a high energy puppy. He is learning how to appropriately play with the foster family dog and what appropriate behavior in the house and around people is. Drake has learned “sit” and is learning how to walk on a leash. Drake will need a family that will provide him with lots of exercise, continue working on his manners, and provide lots of love especially belly rubs. Obedience training is highly recommended for Drake."
