My husband and I rescued a chihuahua puppy that was being hustled in the Walmart parking lot in freezing weather (couple days before Christmas) at only a couple of days old. We were certainly not in the market for a pup, as we have three of our own, but we couldn't bear the sight of how they were being treated and the fact that they were incredibly tiny and very obviously newborn/prematurely weened. We meant to be a transition home for him, but wanted to be certain that his health was in order first. We ended up hospitalizing him at UGA shortly after rescuing him due to an unestablished immunity that left him vulnerable to a parasite and extreme hypothermia and hypoglycemia. Upon his release, we had to teach him to eat again. We wanted to keep him through all of his vaccinations and had to essentially quarantine him for his safety and health - both from our dogs and the outside. He's since doing amazing with no health problems. He is in the process of being create trained.
