This is Sugar Ray....a little boy who was fighting for a better life. His body showed the neglect he had endured. His raw skin hurt so badly he didn't even want to be touched. The constant biting of fleas was eating away at him, to the point most of his hair had fallen out. That was our first glimpse of Sugar Ray and the terrible life he had been dealt. We couldn't bear the thought of this poor boy continuing down that sad path. We had to intervene and save him. He was also found to be heartworm positive and needed life-saving treatment which Dolly's Legacy provided for him. Within a few weeks he began to blossom. His spirit and body were renewed, and he began to recover. He is looking and feeling like brand new. We are inspired by the fight he had in him to find his way out of that existence and on to a better life. Sugar Ray now has a lot of spunk & is full of character. He is the king of all things, little but mighty. Nothing or nobody gets in his way. He would do best in a home with no small kids as they would not understand him trying to tell them he is the boss. He LOVES his toys, always taking one outside but comes back in with a different one. Sugar Ray is housetrained, kennel trained and does well with other dogs of all sizes. He makes a good little lap dog and companion.
Sugar Ray was rescued from a high intake rural outdoor shelter in Southeastern Missouri where he was on death row in the condition described above. There is no adoption program there, his only way out alive was to be rescued. Dolly's Legacy is honored to have saved his life and have promised him a happy home.
Sugar Ray is a ShihTzu male, was born approximately 6-13-14 and weighs 16 lbs. He is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, given flea/tick preventative, dewormed and treated for heartworm disease. Adoption fee is $275. He will need to remain on heartworm preventative for the rest of his life, as all dogs should, and retested for heartworm status again in 6 months. He will need regular grooming because he is a long-coated dog, approximately every 6-8 weeks. The FIRST step is to have you complete our online adoption application. All adoption appointments are scheduled AFTER your application has been approved. Preference is given to those with a verifiable veterinary reference, home ownership & fenced yard, although not required. Home ownership is verified through court records.
