My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UPDATE: 12/2017
Nala's information about her age at animal control was wrong.
Her birthday is March 10th 2013, so she is only 4 1/2 years old.

Nala is a 62 pound lab mix. And she is copper, like a lucky penny.

Her eyes will melt your heart! Eager to please and just wants to be loved, she will snuggle and not leave your side. She would make the perfect sidekick and travel companion for someone who is willing to put a little work into her training. Perfectly house trained.

She is laid back but playful! Loves playtime and going places. If you’re looking for a travel buddy, Nala is your girl! She gets very excited to go places so still needs work on the leash. Loves giving kisses but still nips on occasion when she gets excited. This puppy like trait is easy to fix with consistent reminders. Nala loves being around people, kids included, and perfectly happy snuggling on the couch with a blanket.

Expert level ball player! Needs strong toys, can be destructive with toys, but only toys. Has never torn anything else up.

Perfectly house trained. Knows sit and shake. Working on wait and lay.

Being yelled at scares her. She only wants to please; a stern voice is nicer than yelling

LOVES car rides and going places.

She wants to play with cats but is reactive, so if they come towards her it probably won't end well, so a cat free home is needed.

She gets along with dogs, probably better with larger dogs. Can play rough. Needs supervision. She does good with kids. Loves strangers. Haven’t had visitors yet but very protective when watching out window or in the yard.

Her health is great!

She is kennel trained. Needs calm interaction with getting locked in, otherwise will have slight anxiety and will try to tear up kennel. She has tried escaping from her kennel a few times when everyone, including dogs, were gone. She does not like to feel completely alone. Music, treats, favorite blanket, help her feel comfortable in kennel. At night she sleeps snuggled in blankets on the bed.

Nala is definitely a puller on the leash. Needs more work but she gets so excited to go anywhere

She hasn’t gotten out of the fence, but she does hops when she gets excited and runs, so could possibly be an issue for a shorter fence.

Poor thing just wants attention and to be part of a loving family; you can tell she was neglected as younger dog/puppy since these are issues that should have been trained out of her when she was younger.

How did Nala end up in rescue? She was found abandoned on Old Alton Road and taken to animal control. Nala is microchipped and the "owner" was called. We were told he gave her away 4 years ago and does not remember who to. Funny, her chip was updated a year ago. The owners address is Belleville. Imagine how confused she must have been dumped in a strange town in the middle of nowhere.

Most of the animals listed on here are in foster homes, but some are still residing at the Granite City Animal Control until they can be adopted or there is a foster home opening.

Pound Pets Inc Rescue can always use more fosters.

Pound Pets volunteers cleans the animal control building, we are the caregivers for the animals brought in. Once they come through the door, they become our responsibility. We photograph all animals and post to the Pound Pets Facebook page. We provide them clean kennels, beds, blankets, toys, treats, outside play time, walks and human interaction. We try to comfort the scared, keep the high-energy ones exercised and provide plenty of love and affection to make their time at animal control as less stressful as possible.

Sometimes they get reclaimed by their families and sometimes they don't. If they don't it is our responsibility to find the adopters, fosters or rescues to save them from euthanasia.

We get in sick and injured animals as well. They do not sit in their kennels or cages needing veterinary care. Once we see the need for care they are taken to the vet. Sometimes the illness or injury is minor and the city will cover the bill, Other times when it's not, we do. We do all of this on our own dime. We buy the food, the beds, the blankets, the toys, and all the other things that go into care for the animals. Sometimes things are donated and that is wonderful!! We pay the medical bills that the city doesn't. As with most animal controls, there is a limit on what they will do or cover. At Pound Pets, there is no limit. Broken Bones, Surgery, Parvo, Heartworm, etc., if the animal has a chance the animal is given that chance. This is not a shelter but an animal control.
