While perusing Facebook, one of our volunteers came upon a picture of a pathetic-looking black retriever at a shelter in AL. This adorable two-year-old boy was picked up as a stray in Baldwin County and went unclaimed. Like many strays, this pup was in rough shape; underweight and with a coat in need of some good nutrition. It was all we could do to keep from climbing into our computer screens to reach out and save this boy!
Sweet Jack has soft, expressive eyes that seem to look right into your heart, and he often looks to his humans for direction and assurance. Lisa, our volunteer in AL, remarked, "You just want to put your arms around Jack and hug him and let him know everything will be okay." Jack is dog friendly and even shared his kennel at the shelter with another dog. Even during meals times, there was perfect harmony between the two dogs.
Jack has a nice energy level for an active adopter or active family. If you are looking for a buddy to spend you days and nights with, Jack will gladly oblige. If a hike in the mountains is in your plans, he'll be right at your side. Whatever your day holds, this black beauty will be happy to be right at your side. Jack is somewhat thin at 40 lbs right now, but should be a nice medium-sized dog when he puts on about 10 pounds. His coat is in need of good nourishment too, but if you can see beyond his current appearance to the vision of what he will become, you have yourself one stunningly handsome boy! He's just a wee bit of a fixer upper! :-)
Jack is new to our rescue and we will update his bio as we learn more about this endearing munchkin! We hope to have some new photos soon too. Jack is up-to-date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, neutered, and micro-chipped. He will be ready to come north to his forever home in late September. This boy is not going to last!
Rescued dogs come with a range of needs - from behavioral to emotional to medical. When approved applicants adopt such dogs, they agree to continue the rehabilitation we have begun. Black "Goldens...?"
Since the early 2000’s, animal rescue workers have noticed an increasing phenomena called, “Black Dog Syndrome,” which is that black dogs tend to be adopted more slowly than dogs of other coloring. As a result, there are more black dogs in shelters, and black dogs have a higher euthanization rate – purely because of the color of their coat! In a recent survey done by the adoption website “Petfinder,” Petfinder member shelters and rescue groups reported that most pets are listed for 12.5 weeks on Petfinder, whereas, less-adoptable pets (such as black, senior, and special needs pets) spend almost four times as long on Petfinder.
You may ask, "what does this have to do with a Golden Retriever rescue?" Our rescue often goes a step further than basic rescue, by taking in dogs that might be thought of as “less adoptable” because of their physical condition. We have expanded that to include these special black dogs, many often thought to be Golden mixes. Since doing so, we have seen an overwhelming interest in these “black goldens,” and note that we begin receiving inquiries about them as son as we publish their pictures on our website! Like all of our dogs, these pups are just looking for a family that can see beyond their coloring to their true “golden heartedness,” and to love them and make them their own! Those who can, will be glad they did!

About Our Rescue
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.
The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.
A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.
Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
