Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Lionel came to us as a stray. He tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. He's a big friendly guy, a lot like a teddy bear! He likes to play with sparkly balls and feather toys. He's waiting for his forever home. Even though he has FIV, he can have many healthy, happy years ahead of him!
Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) causes an infectious disease in cats similar to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV infection) in humans. It attacks and weakens the immune system, making the cat susceptible to infections and diseases that don't usually affect healthy cats. There is no cure for FIV, and the use of vaccines to prevent infection is somewhat controversial. FIV is a lentivirus, a virus that causes slowly developing disease. Though eventually fatal, an FIV-positive cat can live for many years without any signs of illness.
