Dakota's Story...
Dakota” in Native American translation means “friend and ally” so we are not surprised that this little boy is appropriately named.

At just 6 months old, Dakota and his brother Derby were dropped at a shelter and left to die. At their tender age it’s hard to imagine they would have done anything wrong enough to do that to a dog. But there they were – scared, cold with only each other in unfamiliar surroundings. You can see from the photo below that for Dakota, shelter life was not something he adjusted well to. Who can blame him?

So – Dakota and his brother made a 14 hour trip to us and we’re happy to report that they are adjusting to life in a home. :) Dakota is still pretty shy and not sure what to make of things - it's an awful lot of change for a little puppy to understand. Once he is comfortable, though, he is an energetic little boy – a typical puppy who likes to play. Quick on his feet Dakota will benefit from basic obedience

training because it’s fairly apparent he has not had any. Tricolored with quite a bit of ticking, Dakota is up to date on shots, heartworm negative, neutered and dog friendly. He is making slow but steady progress with cratetraining and housetraining, so adopters need to understand this. His perfect owner would be someone who wants a puppy and realizes that with puppyhood comes a lot of fun and a lot of work as well.

Please check back to learn more after we assess him in foster care!

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Dakota, a Portland Beagle puppy was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Beagle for sale in Portland, or seeking a Beagle puppy from a breeder in Portland.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Portland already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Portland breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Beagle breeders who help with Beagle rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Portland paves the way for another one to be saved.
