My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Truffle is possibly the one of the biggest success stories for the staff and volunteer handlers at the shelter. She first came to the shelter in May 2009 along with two other dogs she had been living with. The two other dogs had lived in the house and were friendly and confident and, although lacking any training, they were soon adopted. Truffle however had not been so fortunate and her life experiences had made her petrified of everything and everyone. When Truffle was taken out her cage and brought to the handlers she would shake and try to make herself invisible. Sensitive to noise, movement and touch, watching her frozen with fear was absolutely heartbreaking only made worse by knowing there was no means to comfort her and tell her how safe she was. No-one knew if poor Truffle would ever improve enough to be able to live a normal life in a normal, noisy, busy home. Little by little, each time Truffle came out, the shaking would decrease, the tail would become less tucked and the eyes would be raised a little further off the floor toward the handler. Eventually the notes written by the handlers changed from “shaking” and “fearful” to “sat for quiet petting” and “got a tail wag today.” Some days were better than others “no interest in toys” was a constant and sad reminder that Truffle’s life had been less than perfect. And sometimes Truffle just plain forgot to be scared “Lots of play bows and Pitty smiles and then she scared herself and stopped” wrote one handler. Today we have a whole new Truffle, unrecognizable from the dog who arrived at the shelter more than five months ago. Truffle takes all treats gently, follows all her obedience commands except for some unexplained reason “down” and now she even plays with the toys. Her favorite thing in the whole wide world is love and hugs and then some more love and hugs. So why do we still have such a great dog? Probably because she is a Pit-bull and many people just cannot see past the tough image and bad press. But honestly it doesn’t matter. Truffle is happy and safe and she deserves only the best home which we know will find her one day soon.
